IN THE NEWS
In its continuing carriage dispute with
Charter Spectrum, which left Univision dark on Charter,
Univision Communications released the following statement late yesterday afternoon: âA judge who was temporarily assigned to our case today said that she planned to issue an order that Univision's networks and stations had to be restored on Charter Spectrum for 7 days. This order only lasts until February 9, when the judge permanently assigned to the litigation is back in court. For the 7 day period that it is receiving Univisionâs services, Charter Spectrum will be required to post a bond covering the actual market value of Univisionâs programming, rather than the inadequate rates that Charter Spectrum has been paying. Univision remains ready and willing to meet at any time with Charter Spectrum to engage in comprehensive, good-faith negotiations for the long term carriage of our stations and networks. To date, Charter Spectrum has steadfastly refused to engage in such negotiations.â
A+E Networks is investing in the
National Womenâs Soccer League with an equity stake, and together the two entities are launching
NWSL Media, a media and commercial joint venture.
Lifetime will be official sponsor and broadcast partner of the league in a three-year deal beginning in April with the broadcast of an NWSL Game of the Week every weekend of the season.
Dan Surrat, A+E Netsâ president, corporate development, strategy and Investments, told Cynopsis at a presser that the move is about the evolution of the Lifetime brand. âThereâs absolutely a sense of mission for the Lifetime brand as itâs evolving, and the launch of the Fempire, which is about creating engaging content and the empowerment of women at all ages. This is a sport that completely fits into that, when you look at what soccer has done over the last 15 or 20 years with its growth in the US.â A+E Netsâ president/CEO
Nancy Dubuc said the new sports content will face âthe same challenges we face with any show we do. At first audiences donât have connection to characters, thereâs no connection to story, thereâs not even awareness of what that show is or what its brand is. Itâs only with risk-taking that we can grow a franchise into a show like a
Dance Moms or an
Unreal or a
Rap Game. And this is a comparable investment.â Dubuc added the NWSLâs existing brand provides a big leg up. âWe donât have to take that risk of whether or not thereâs any audience that goes to NWSL games, or whether thereâs interest in soccer or not. We know thatâs there. And in a world where marketing and social and the way you can target audiences are all evolving, itâs easier for us to find those constituents who are already passionate and predisposed to be passionate about womenâs soccer.â
Conan OâBrien will return to NYâs
Apollo Theatre to originate his show from the Harlem venue November 7-12 as part of
TBSâ alliance with the
New York Comedy Festival. The network plans to activate fan experiences throughout the festival across digital and linear platforms, and explore development opportunities with comics appearing at the fest.
As seen on TV:
Donald Trump took the first moments of the National Prayer Breakfast on Wednesday to praise his success as a television show host and blast the ratings for
Celebrity Apprentice and its current host
Arnold Schwarzenegger. âI want to just pray for Arnold, if we can. For those ratings. OK?â Trump told the gathering of religious leaders and diplomats. Schwarzenegger quickly responded via a rep: âArnold is praying that President Trump can start improving his own approval ratings, which were the worst in history for an incoming President, by taking his job seriously and working inclusively.â Trump press secretary Sean Spicer yesterday called it a âlighthearted momentâ and said âthe totalityâ of Trumpâs remarks at the breakfast âwere absolutely beautiful.â
TBSâ
Samantha Bee announced her April 29
Not the White House Correspondentsâ Dinner earlier this week, and yesterday the correspondents group released a statement saying its show will go on, on the same date in DC. It is unclear whether Donald Trump will attend the White House Correspondentsâ Dinner, given his disdain of many in the media who cover the White House.
In other White House news, Trump will be down one for his meeting today with business leaders that make up his Presidentâs Strategic and Policy Forum. Disney chief
Bob Iger will reportedly not be attending due to a previously scheduled board meeting.
UCLA School of Theater, Film and Televisionâs Professional Programs today announced the winners of its
Television Pilot Competition. The awards are determined by industry professionals and UCLA alumni; winners received a monetary prize. Winners are:
Stephanie Berger (comedy) and
Andrew Lewellen (drama). Honorable mentions went to
Tyler Chatham (comedy) and
Dominique Mouton (drama).
CBS plans to merge CBS Radio into
Entercom Communications. The move would create a company with 224 stations, in 23 of the 25 biggest markets. The transaction is expected to close in the second half of this year.

Destination America will debut

Walking Dead or
Stranger Things with aggressive monsters on the loose,â he says. âThe show features the very-real Gulf Coast Bigfoot Research Organization as they help frightened people in the south deal with a mysterious creature as it torments their property, as well as harvest a specimen for research to prove once and for all that Bigfoot is real.â

What are the most important adjustments
Scripps has made in a changing landscape, in terms of programming and advertising opportunities?
Beth Lawrence, EVP of Digital Ad Sales, tells Cynopsis, "One of our biggest opportunities to flex is with our digital business, which changes so often that we've taught ourselves how to adapt more quickly. When we do that, we accommodate both the consumer who's viewing our fantastic content in a variety of places and the marketer trying to move product to the right audience, wherever they may be. Weâre incredibly flexible as we expand the definition of digital." Scripps Networks Interactive will be at the
Cynopsis TV Awards next week, as a nominee, in several categories. For a seat at the gala celebration go here:
