TECH TALK AT&T, as it proceeds with Airship, a new way to build a cloud, inked a deal with source cloud company Mirantis to help build out and manage the infrastructure for its 5G network. “AT&T is the biggest, baddest, oldest telco out there,” Mirantis cofounder and CMO Boris Renski told Business Insider. “For this refresh cycle, for the first time in telco history, they are choosing to not buy new [proprietary] boxes but, instead, use tech open sourced by Google to refresh their network for their 5G cycle. DIGITAL CBS projects it will have 22 million U.S. subscribers across CBS All Access and Showime OTT by 2022, up from eight million now. “Our strategy of creating more of the premium content that audiences want and making it available across new and traditional platforms continues to pay off, driving quarterly increases in subscribers at CBS and Showtime, both consecutively and year over year,” said Joe Ianniello, president and acting CEO at CBS. Spotify is making a big bet on podcasting, ponying up about $337 for podcast producer Gimlet Media and services provider Anchor FM, according to an SEC filing. “We are building a platform that provides a meaningful opportunity for creators, excites and engages our users, and builds an even more robust business model for Spotify in an industry we believe will become significantly larger when you add Internet-level monetization to it,” blogged Spotify Founder and CEO Daniel Ek after the announcement of the deal. Hearst Magazines acquired female-centered lifestyle news YouTube channel network Clevver, which had been owned by now-shuttered Defy Media and engages more than 15 million subscribers. “This investment underscores our commitment to premium video that super-serves our audience of young women and will further accelerate our growth on YouTube and other digital video platforms,” said Hearst Magazines. ADVERTISING Digital ad revenue was $26.2 billion in 3Q18, up 22% versus the year prior, according to a report for the IAB from PwC U.S. “Last year saw significant growth in the OTT marketplace and in the direct-to-consumer brand ecosystem - contributing factors in digital’s successful Q3,” said Sue Hogan, SVP of Research and Measurement for the IAB. There are hundreds of millions of dollars left on the table that publishers could easily get back each year, says Marty Kratky-Katz, CEO of ad recovery solutions company Blockthrough. Viacom International Media Networks is joining forces with Facebook in the UK to launch a live and interactive quiz game show on Facebook Watch called MTV STAX.
