PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Jimmy Smits is returning to the TV courtroom. The former LA Law star was tapped as the male lead in Bluff City Law (wt), NBC’s legal drama pilot from The Brave creator Dean Georgaris, David Janollari, Michael Aguilar and Universal TV. The character-driven project follows the lawyers of an elite Memphis firm that specializes in the most controversial landmark civil rights cases.

Rolling Stone and Imagine Documentaries teamed to produce Sound & Vision, a rock and roll anthology series of films that delve into unique moments in music and cultural history. Framed by reporting from Rolling Stone, episodes will run the gamut from biographical to investigatory of a watershed event or cultural milestone.

Cobie Smulders (Avengers) is heading back to network TV as the lead in Stumptown, ABC’s drama pilot from writer Jason Richman, Ruben Fleischer and ABC Studios. Written by Richman and inspired by graphic novels published by Oni Press, the project follows Dex Parios (Smulders), an assertive and sharp-witted Army vet working as a P.I. in Portland, OR.

The Gremlins are headed to TV. An animated series based on the film franchise is in development at Warner Media’s upcoming streaming service. The project will be a prequel and follow Mr. Wing, the Chinese grandfather featured in the films, as a young man going on adventures with Mogwai Gizmo. Warner Bros. TV and Amblin TV would co-produce.

The Professional Fighters League, a mixed martial arts rival to UFC, inked a multi-year deal with ESPN and ESPN+, making it the exclusive home of the PFL in the U.S. Under the pact’s terms all PFL events in 2019 will air live across ESPN2, ESPN, Desportes and ESPN+, the direct-to-consumer subscription sports streaming service. The rights include the regular season, playoffs and championship event.

TECH TALK

With the number of 5G network launches and compatible devices increasing, 5G is on track to account for 15% of global mobile connections by 2025, according to a new report from GSMA. The 2019 global edition of GSMA’s flagship Mobile Economy report series reveals that an additional 16 major markets worldwide will switch on commercial 5G networks in 2019, following the first 5G launches in South Korea and the US in 2018. It is calculated that mobile operators worldwide are investing $160 billion per year (capex) on expanding and upgrading their networks, despite regulatory and competitive pressures.

Verizon Media launched Verizon Ads SDK, a single and modular SDK for app developers that brings the best monetization assets of AOL and Yahoo together, and can provide access to complete mobile demand across Oath Ad Platforms. The SDK integrates with the IAB Tech Lab Open Measurement SDK to allow seamless viewability measurement by the industry’s leading third-party providers.

Microsoft unveiled its augmented reality headset HoloLens 2 at the Mobile World Congress, the telecom industry’s premiere trade show in Barcelona. The first iteration of HoloLens, which launched four years ago, “didn’t exactly light the world on fire,” wrote Caitlin McGarry for Tom’s Guide, noting that the $5000 wearable, which married augmented and virtual realities, was too big, too expensive and too limited it what it could achieve. “So Microsoft is giving its vision another shot with HoloLens 2, a $3500 hand-tracking headset designed for work, not home.”

GOING GLOBAL

Fremantle, Syco Entertainment and Hunan TV teamed to develop a 13-part series for China based on the globally successful Got Talent format franchise. Series will be called Dian Feng Zhi Lu, which translates to World’s Got Talent, and will air in April on Hunan TV.

FirstLook TV acquired the second season of Inside the Mind of a Serial Killer from Banijay Rights. The true crime series will air on UKTV’s Really channel and Foxtel in Australia.

Red Arrow Studios International and Nippon TV teamed to distribute Beat the Rooms. The game show format will launch at MIPTV with Nippon handling sales for Asia and Red Arrow taking rights for the rest of the world.
