DIGITAL DATA

Comcast CEO Brian Roberts indicated targeted advertising is a goal for NBCUniversal’s ad-supported streaming service, slated to debut in 2020. “We still do most of [our advertising] through the broadcast and cable technology where we all experience the same thing,” said Roberts at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Telcom Conference. “We’re not giving you an intelligent ad. These streaming platforms have that capability.” As far as the company’s content, “Some of it will monetize best being on an advertising platform, others will monetize best being on a third-party platform,” said Roberts. “We’re very much focused on not just, as others have said, going completely cold turkey and taking it off all these other platforms. I don’t think that’s our mindset at the moment. We like those relationships.”

Facebook is planning to renew only about a third of the news shows it launched for Facebook Watch since June. Partners have included CNN, ABC News, Univision and more. “We’re going to continue experimenting with news publishers in Watch and sharing what we learn,” said Shelley Venus, Facebook’s video lead for news partnerships. “We’re partnering with these organizations to build sustainable video businesses, where Facebook can be one part of their overall strategy.”

Litton Entertainment and travel entertainment app JOURNY powered by Ovation, announced the addition Rock the Park and Emmy-nominated The Voyager with Josh Garcia

ADVERTISING

Mobile location data-targeting platform SITO Mobile introduced a performance guarantee in which SITO will develop, plan and execute media buys that meet or exceed mutually agreed upon key performance indicators - or SITO will continue  to run the campaign at its own expense until the agreed-upon campaign goals are reached. Advertisers must traffic the campaign using SITO’s DSP and ad server platform; SITO will incorporate an MRC accredited, third-party campaign measurement service of the marketer’s choice, at no additional cost.

According to new research from the CMO Council, in partnership with Harte Hanks, 41% of marketers worry that in the race to master data and technology, an understanding of human relationships is lost; nearly one-third of respondents admit that they sometimes forget that their “targets” are human beings. “Somewhere in our adoption of data, technology and process, the customer and the very real, human and fragile relationships that marketers have worked so hard to build have been lost, giving way to settling for assumptions about broad personas and an almost obsessive focus on campaign performance,” said Liz Miller, SVP of Marketing with the CMO Council. “What came to life most notably in this research was the absolute desire of marketers to go back to their roots of relationship builders, leveraging the ‘why’ behind customer actions and intentions to build lasting dialogues with customers instead of just pushing accounts and targets down a pre-set campaign path.” Exceptions were marquee experiential brands like Amazon, Google, Apple, Nike and Starbucks, which 42% of marketers believe are using omni-channel engagement to guide and inspire customers, leveraging their experience as a driver for profitability and growth.

TECH TALK

Voice control for their next TV was important to 32% of consumers surveyed by Adobe Anaytics. Thirty-six percent of respondents said they already had smart speakers, versus 28% last year. Asked whether they have increased their use of smart speaker devices over the past year, 77% said yes.

Google’s AI-powered grammar-checker will be a native feature in Google Docs for G Suite users, for businesses. Before, a system administrator had to turn on the feature. “Using machine translation, we are able to recognize errors and suggest corrections as work is getting done,” said Vishnu Sivaji, a G Suite product manager at Google, in a blog post. “In doing so, machine translation techniques can catch a range of different corrections, from simple grammatical rules such as how to use ‘a’ versus ‘an’ in a sentence, to more complex grammatical concepts such as how to use subordinate clauses correctly.”

Video startup Xumo is in talks to be acquired, reports Variety. Launched in 2011, Xumo lets consumers browse streaming channels on their TV, and has distribution partnerships with smart TV makers.

Pandora jumps on the podcast craze with the launch of Stories, which lets artists create playlists that include commentary. “Podcasts can tell stories about music, but it’s difficult to include full songs. Regular playlists have songs but lack personal context from the artists behind them,” said Jeff Zuchowski, VP of Artist Marketing and Industry Marketing. “We’ve created Pandora Stories to fill that void.”
