TECH TALK

It looks like Samsung might be getting closer to launching a fully wireless TV set, if a recent patent suggests anything about the company’s future plans. The patent, brought to light by Dutch publication Let’s Go Digital, shows a standard television monitor with a separate long, narrow bar that functions as a wireless power transceiver. The bar, which would magnetically attach to the TV, contains a wide power coil and potentially has speakers mounted on its ends. The TV would also use a separate box including a wireless power transmitter. It’s unclear how far the TV and transceiver could be located from the transmitter, but Samsung’s description in the patent indicatrs they would need to be fairly close together. Samsung describes the technology in the patent as a solution for obscuring wires hanging from wall-mounted TV sets.

Google started testing shoppable ads within image searches that only apply to sponsored ads in a move aimed at capitalizing on “visual shoppers.”  “Shoppers aren’t just doing their searches on Google.com,” wrote Surojit Chatterjee, VP of product management at Shopping, in a blog post. “We’ve seen that 50% of online shoppers said images of the product inspired them to purchase, and increasingly, they’re turning to Google Images.”

DIGITAL DOINGS

Shopify Studios launched two new digital series. Beauty Mark follows hosts Jess Sanchez and Rachel Hale as they travel to meet female entrepreneurs who have carved out their space in the beauty industry, while Unpacking Business with Shay Mitchell features Shay Mitchell heading to businesses across Los Angeles to meet the women behind them. Both projects debuted on YouTube yesterday as part of Shopify’s International Women’s Day Playlist.

Take It There with Taylor Rooks bows on Bleacher Report this April. The weekly series features one-on-one conversations with top athletes, celebrities and influencers.

A new streaming video service is launching this week. And not only is it free, it will pay users to watch it. TaTaTu, founded by movie producer Andrea Iervolino, will launch with around 900 titles, spanning some 1800 hours. The company will give registered users blockchain-based tokens for viewing content or sharing the app with friends. The token can then be redeemed for discounts, special prices and goods from participating companies. Creators who generate content for the platform can also receive tokens.

Telemundo Desportes announced the first-ever Spanish language esports channel in the U.S., offering fans more than 2,000 streaming hours of content a year. The channel is available on Twitch and YouTube. The EA Sports FIFA19 Global Series is the first competition to stream on the channel, presenting exclusive coverage of the entire tournament, including the upcoming events from the Global Series and the Grand Final. Live coverage of the event begins with the Global Series’ EA FUT Champions Cup on Friday, April 5.

GOING GLOBAL

WAG Entertainment pre-sold series WW2 In Numbers and War Factories to broadcasters in UK, France, Germany, Italy, CEE, Nordics and Africa. The company is also expected to be closing deals for True Evil: Making of a Nazi.

Essential Media Group is shooting Griff Off the Rails: Down Under, starring British comedian and travel enthusiast Griff Rhys Jones. The six-part factual series was acquired by ABC TV in Australia.

Armoza Formats launched drama Muna for MIPTV. The series, which aired on Israel’s Kan, was created by Palestinian-Israeli musician Awad Mira and inspired by her controversial journey as Israeli’s representative at the Eurovision Song Contest.

Food Network Canada’s culinary competition Top Chef Canada returns Monday, April 1 at 10p.
