TECH TALK Nielsen’s latest Total Audience Report dropped yesterday, including the insight that US adults spend 10 hours and 30 minutes per day connected to media, the same amount as one year ago. Adults 50-64 spend more time per day on media than any other age group; A18-34 spend more than one-third of their daily media usage on smartphones; and black adults spend nearly 13 hours per day across all media. In other findings: * Streaming devices and services continue their ascent. Enabled smart TV penetration grew to 41 percent in September 2018 from 32 percent in September 2017 as users continue to replace their older television sets. * Internet enabled TV-connected devices can be found in 68 percent of US households, up from 63 percent in September 2017. * Streaming video on demand (SVOD) content is now available in 67 percent of TV homes, compared to 61 percent one year ago. Year-over-year growth is also occurring among households of all races and ethnicities. Eight out of 10 Asian American, seven out of 10 Hispanic and six out of 10 Black households subscribe to an SVOD service. * Time spent on TV-connected devices and app/web on smartphones increased across all demographics. Time per day on smartphones increased by 23 minutes for both Q18-34, more than any other group or platform. * Older demographic group’s share of daily time spent with TV-connected devices and app/web on a smartphone increased from Q3 2017 to Q3 2018. Frustration with mobile streaming video is on the rise, according to a new survey from software company Penthera, with OTT users less tolerant of tech problems than they were a year ago. Eighty-eight percent of respondents said they respond to streaming problems by either giving up and trying again later, stopping use of a particular service, canceling their subscription, or writing a negative review in the App Store. Download was seen as a solution to streaming problems, with 59% saying they expect a streaming service to offer the feature, and 67% saying they’d pay a premium of up to $5 for the feature. RATINGS Food Network’s Sunday night was up 29% vs. the same day a year ago, led by the second outing of Buddy vs. Duff at 9p, which posted a .8 rating among A25-54, up 8% from last week’s premiere. The second week also posted a 1.0 rating among W25-54, up 7%, and ranking No. 3 for both demos among ad-supported cable. Highlighting the session ended March 10, Jeopardy handily topped all syndicated game shows after longtime host Alex Trebek revealed that he had been diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. Fellow quiz strips Wheel of Fortune (6.6, unchanged) and Family Feud (6.5, up 2%) trailed Trebek’s program.
Despite the jump Jeopardy was no match for ratings powerhouse Judge Judy, which continued to clobber every show on the Nielsen chart for an epic 35th straight week.
Meanwhile after taking two months off due to illness and injury Wendy Williams returned to her eponymous program (new season high 1.5, up 36% following a week of reruns), landing in fourth place among the talk shows. Dr Phil (3.1, up 3%) led the talkers for the 131st week in a row despite being partly in repeats.
Others outperforming Wendy were Live with Kelly and Ryan (2.4, steady), which snared sole possession of second place for a second straight week, just missing its season high, and Ellen DeGeneres (1.8, down 18%), which aired encore episodes all week.
The hottest show on the magazine rack was Daily Mail TV (new season high 1.2, up 9%), which tied Extra and scored both the largest week to week and year to year increases among the top seven in the category. Also seeing a sharp annual upswing was Access (1.4, up 8% from last year), which leapfrogged over TMZ (1.3, down 7% from last year). Among the foremost rookie shows, Chicago PD (1.1, up 10% from the week before) equaled its biggest rating yet, while shooting up 20% in the coveted W25-54 age group.
