The kids’ net ordered an animated version to be developed by Kevin and Dan Hageman (Ninjago), from CBS’s Eye Animation Productions, Roddenberry Entertainment and Secret Hideout. “Star Trek’s mission is to inspire generations of dreamers to build a brighter future,” said Alex Kurtzman, an exec producer. “Dan and Kevin have crafted a story that honors its exploratory spirit in a way that’s never been done before, while the Nickelodeon team blew us away with their excitement at bringing Trek to a younger generation around the world.” Nickelodeon also renewed Ryan’s Mystery Playdate for a second season. Topgolf, a sports entertainment experience, and digital entertainment media company Whistle are teaming to produce, market and distribute an original reality series, “The Tour,” for golf’s next-generation event. Blue Ant Media’s Antenna Pictures and Viceland announced the greenlight of drama-documentary How to Rob a Bank, telling the stories of ordinary Americans who spiral into becoming bank robbers. AUDIENCE RESEARCH Viewers are experimenting with streaming services, but don’t count out old school antennas. According to Horowitz’s “State of Pay TV, OTT &SVOD 2019” study, 34% of TV content viewers are accessing over-the-air TV content via an antenna. And it’s not just grandma - antenna owners are younger (40% of antenna owners are 18-34 vs. 31% of total TV content viewers) and skew male (59% vs. 49% of total TV content viewers). Among traditional MVPD non-subscribers, 51% report owning an antenna. The study also found antenna owners are more likely to subscribe to one of the three major SVOD services (78% subscribe to Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime Video, vs. 67% of TV content viewers). People with liberal leanings like many more TV shows than their more conservative counterparts, according to USC’s Normal Lear Center and the futurePerfect Lab “Are You What You Watch?” report. They are also open to viewing foreign entertainment and programming that doesn’t reflect their values. The swing group in the middle are more voracious viewers than either liberals or conservatives, and more likely to take action based on what they learn about politics and social issues from TV. BRANDS Brands spent an average of $13.71 to drive each incremental store visit in 2018, about ten dollars less than the average spent in 2017 ($23.05), according to the third annual Footfall Attribution Benchmarks report by Cuebiq. The auto category had the highest cost per incremental visit in 2018 at $291.02, followed by Home Furniture, $114.86, and Grocery Stores, $76.75. Alcohol/Beverages ranked No. 1 among all categories in visit rate in 2018 with 14.58%, followed by Beauty (13.56%), and Convenience Stores (7.24%). The IAB Technology Laboratory released SIMID (Secure Interactive Media Interface Definition) for public comment, a specification designed to replace VPAID (Video Player Ad Interface Definition) and increase transparency. “With SIMID, Tech Lab is responding to the needs of the evolving video advertising marketplace, creating an interactivity solution that should become a critical part of the video supply chain and will promote transparency and security,” said Dennis Buchheim, SVP and General Manager, IAB Tech Lab. “Everyone who has relied on VPAID for interactivity should please review SIMID and provide us with feedback, so it can become a critical part of the video supply chain and drive greater transparency across the ecosystem.” To optimize its algorithmic data services offerings, Cox Media Group’s Videa will include textual metadata from Red Bee Media in their next-generation system. Faced with stiff competition in the travel industry, the company’s CEO, Brian Chesky, “wants to create a studio,” a source told Reuters.
