IN THE NEWS The Walt Disney Company is taking full control of Hulu effective immediately, in return for Disney and Comcast entering into a “put/call” agreement for NBCUniversal’s 33% stake in the service. Disney has the right to buy out NBCU’s share of Hulu as early as January 2024. NBCU can end its licensing agreements with Hulu in three years, and in one year will be able to take back some of the content it licenses to Hulu for its upcoming streaming platform. “We are now able to completely integrate Hulu into our direct-to-consumer business and leverage the full power of The Walt Disney Company’s brands and creative engines to make the service even more compelling and a greater value for consumers,” said Disney CEO Bob Iger. Shortly after the Disney/Hulu deal was announced, FX head John Landgraf told journalists at a press event that he doesn’t think edgy FX belongs on Disney streaming platform Disney+ “at all.” Instead, FX “belongs on Hulu.” Fox NFL Sunday host Terry Bradshaw apologized for a comment he made about Ken Jeong (Dr. Ken) during Fox’s upfront presentation. As part of onstage banter, Bradshaw joked about being eliminated from Fox competition The Masked Singer, on which Jeong was a judge, by “Alan Thicke and the little short guy from Japan.” Said Bradshaw, “I made an insensitive remark today about Ken, who I’ve known for some time. I’ve spoken to him about the importance of cultural respect and apologized for my offensive comments. I would like to also apologize to the Asian-American community for my insensitivity.” (Bradshaw also confused Alan Thicke with his son, Robin Thicke, who was the other Masked Singer judge.) How did ABC feel about its host-less Oscars this year? “We’re very proud of the way it turned out creatively,” said ABC Entertainment head Karey Burke at a press event Tuesday. Not that a `Jimmy Kimmel return to the podium is out of the question. “I’m not saying no to anything,” hedged Burke. A study from Verizon Media and Publicis Media on digital video captioning found that captions with video can drive greater recall and brand favorability. Sixty-nine percent of U.S. consumers polled said they view video with sound off in public places, and 25% watch with sound off in private places. Eighty percent said they are more likely to watch an entire video when captions are available. Upshot: as more consumers watch video on-the-go and in public, video audio is becoming secondary. UPFRONT UPDATES Today, President of Ad Sales Donna Speciale will take the stage for her company’s big Upfront event – but now the name of that company is WarnerMedia, not Turner. Speciale spoke to Cynopsis about the message she has for advertisers. Today’s a big day for your company with your first-ever WarnerMedia Upfront. What does the new WarnerMedia mean? Today is two years in the making. It’s not just a change in name for us, it’s a change in what’s possible, and possible now. Today, we have a portfolio of iconic brands that connect with every member of the family. We are investing big in content - content that spans our existing multiplatform ad-supported experiences, with an eye toward a future AVOD product. Take that and couple it with AT&T data and Xandr insights culled from 170 million, I repeat a 170 million, direct-to-consumer relationships. That is what sets the new WarnerMedia apart. You mention Xandr. How are you continuing to collaborate with them since your news at CES? We announced a lot at CES, and that was just six short months in. Now, at both of our events this week, we get to share even more. Today I’ll highlight two key case studies featuring smart, iconic brands seeing results, thanks to our collaboration. We’ve never had results faster for our advertising partners. These are first quarter partnerships. We can now turn around attribution faster than ever and help brands understand how to best optimize their media buys. What does this all mean for advertisers? Each year, we continue to build on our commitment to making advertising more relevant. We were one of the first to break ground with audience-based buying. But, that isn’t the only solve. To make advertising completely relevant, it needs to hit the mark across the board - right audience, engaging content and optimal environment, ultimately leading to the right business outcome for our partner. Insights are key, trusted brands and environments are important and so are our brand studios which can produce together with our partners. Screenvision Media got a hand at its Upfront event at the Ziegfeld Ballroom from actor Vince Vaughn, as it announced new products, tools and campaigns to define, measure and maximize cinema advertising’s reach. Vaughn spoke to the emotional connection people have for movies and the theatre experience, and Screenvision said it plans to make emotional aspects end engagement rating of movies more measurable and quantifiable. Geena Davis, founder of the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, is partnering with Screenvision to work with studios to ensure gender equality and onscreen representation. “We can make a dramatic cultural change and show women and girls that their aspirations and options are limitless,” said Davis. “Our motto is: If She Can See It, She Can Be It.” In conjunction with SeeHer, Screenvision Media will be creating a #SeeHer Film Trailer Package, allowing brands’ ads to target films aligned with their products. The new offering allows advertisers to bring GEM positive advertisements to film, and give marketers expanded opportunities to showcase their support for increased authentic gender representation in entertainment and advertising. Walt Disney Television’s Upfront presentation at Lincoln Center’s David Geffen Hall had lots of ground to cover, post Fox assets acquisition, with new corporate cousins FX Networks and Nat Geo channels joining the party. Among the highlights: ABC noted it is introducing just three new scripted series in the fall, thanks to its “most stable schedule in over a decade.” Newcomers are dramas Emergence and Stumptown, and comedy Mix-ish.... The net extended its contract with Jimmy Kimmel through his show’s 20th season; Jimmy Kimmel Live! Is currently in season 17. Speaking of, Upfront host Kimmel observed, “The Obamas are making TV shows and Trump is running the country. If this isn’t some Freaky Friday situation.”... Tiffany Haddish (The Last O.G.) will host and exec produce a new iteration of Kids Say the Darndest Things, to air Sundays at 8p (“I intend on getting paid like a white man,” said Haddish). Freeform picked up mermaid drama Siren for a third season, The Bold Type for a fourth, and offered peeks at new series Motherland: Fort Salem, a Party of Five reboot, and comedy Everything’s Gonna Be Okay; starting in September, Freeform will share off-net rights to The Simpsons with new corporate sib FXX; and holiday classics Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Frosty the Snowman will make their first cable appearances during this year’s “25 Days of Christmas.” “Freeform is built on one very powerful belief: that embracing the disruptive voices and diverse identities of our viewers is key to our ongoing success,” said net president Tom Ascheim. Highlights of Nat Geo’s announcements included the return of Brain Games, hosted by Keegan-Michael Key (Friends From College); new series Race to the Center of the Earth, from the producers of Amazing Race, pitting extreme adventurers on a one-of-a-kind journey to win $1 million; and two new unscripted series, Trafficked with Mariana Van Zeller and Lost Cities with Albert Lin, as well as new live event series, Alaska Live. Nat Geo WILD will see the return of veterinary series The Incredible Dr. Pol, Dr. Oakley: Yukon Vet and Dr. K’s Exotic Animal ER, and new shows Critter Fixers, Homestead Vets and Animal SOS. At FX’s pre-Upfront event on Tuesday, FX Chairman John Landgraf told journalists American Crime Story will return when Ryan Murphy “decides what he wants to do next.” Four true crime stories, which FX has rights to, are under consideration. AT&T’s advanced advertising analytics unit, Xandr, announced it has formed Community, a marketplace including content from AT&T’s WarnerMedia, Vice, Hearst Magazines, Newsy, Philo, Tubi and Xumo. “After only eight short months since the launch of Xandr, Community delivers on our promise of a brand-safe, insight-driven, premium video marketplace,” said Brian Lesser, CEO of Xandr. “Building on one of the largest technology platforms in the industry and integrating Xandr’s unique audience insights from AT&T, we created the foundation of Community.” Community will be layered with Xandr’s data stack and audience segments, and be addressable.... Xandr also announced it has enhanced its addressable TV solutions to include new reach and frequency capabilities, expanded cross-screen addressability, and enabled broader access to video on-demand inventory This is just the tip of the Upfronts iceberg – you’ll find details on programming, ad offerings and more in our Upfront / NewFronts Navigator: http://www.cynopsis.com/upfronts |

HLN original series Hell in the Heartland: What Happened to Ashley and Laura? premieres Sunday, June 2 at 9p. DIGITAL DATA Facebook is suing a South Korean developer for violating its terms by using data about users for advertising. Facebook alleges Rankwave has used data associated with its apps “for its own business purposes.” The lawsuit is intended to send a message to developers that Facebook is serious about enforcing its policies, said Jessica Romero, Facebook’s director of platform enforcement and litigation. Apple released its updated Apple TV app across iOS and tvoS, offering a single platform for subscription services from HBO, Showtime, Starz, Tastemade and more. Up to six family members can share subscriptions to Apple TV channels, and movies and TV series can be downloaded for offline viewing. The update includes personalized recommendations and an Up Next section. In less happy Apple news, The Supreme Court ruled that a huge antitrust class action lawsuit against the company can proceed. The lawsuit hinges on that fact that Apple charges up to a 30% commission to developers who sell products in the App Store, but prevents them from selling their apps elsewhere, and has a hand in establishing pricing. Apple said it is confident it will prevail, and that “the App Store is not a monopoly by any metric.” Streaming service Philo reached an agreement with WOW!, a provider of internet, voice and video services, serving residential, business and wholesale customers in the Midwest and Southeast. WOW! will market and sell Philo’s service, priced at $20 per month, to WOW!’s broadband customers. ADVERTISING Comcast’s FreeWheel has launched new OTT buying capabilities for advertisers, in partnership with Simpli.fi. FreeWheel Advertisers’ network of agencies using the Strata platform can now programmatically access the full OTT marketplace through exchanges and direct premium publisher integrations. “We’ve made it easy and accessible for TV and digital buyers to access premium OTT inventory across channels and formats without having to go to multiple vendors, and without leaving the Strata platform,” Judd Rubin, SVP, Revenue and Marketing, FreeWheel Advertisers, tells Cynopsis. “After months of working with buyers on this solution, we are excited to bring a buyer centric industry offering to our agencies.” FYI: “Ads that run during Olympics perform 38 percent better than that same ad outside the Olympics,” NBCU President of Ad Sales & Partnership Mark Marshall tells Cynopsis . “There is a supercharge effect that comes with the Olympics.” That's good news for the company, which has rights to air the Games through 2032. TV advertising helps buyers break through the binge, according to a study, “Entertainment Discovery & Tune-In Research,” released by Xandr in time for Upfronts. Xandr’s research found that although viewers discover shows through many different sources, TV advertising is the most effective medium for viewers to discover new shows and influence content choices. TV ads are the most common way viewers first hear about new shows, according to the survey results. Overall, 56% of viewers learn about new shows from TV advertisements, followed by 43% who hear about shows through word of mouth from friends and family, and 22% who hear about them on social media. “Despite today’s increasingly complex, expanding media landscape, linear TV advertising remains a core mode of show discovery that can cut through the clutter to drive engagement,” said Jason Brown, SVP and head of advertising sales partnerships at Xandr. “TV advertising remains a critical part of a strong cross-platform campaign strategy and a key component in their marketing mix.” Identity and media solutions company 4INFO struck a strategic relationship with Inscape, provider of smart TV viewing data, to help marketers match online and offline data to smart TV viewing data. Combining 4INFO’s Advanced TV solutions, powered by its Custom Connected Identity Map, with the opt-in smart TV viewing data from Inscape is designed to help marketers more accurately target, optimize and segment specific interactions with consumers. Video presents brands with a unique opportunity to engage consumers in an interactive dialogue. But traditional advertisers are still struggling to understand the value and how to capture attention.
