TECH TALK Bowing to the reality that most people prefer to create and watch long-form video in landscape mode and hoping to encourage usage of IGTV, Instagram is breaking the original design that allowed only vertical video to support horizontal video, as well. It remains to be seen if the move will help IGTV, positioned as a YouTube rival, get off the ground. IGTV still lacks monetization features that would provide greater incentives for creators to distribute original video on the platform. However, Instagram says monetization plans for IGTV are on the drawing board. Apple introduced a new technology that allows attribution of advertising clicks, while protecting user privacy. In a blog post on Wednesday, John Wilander, a security and privacy engineer on the WebKit team at Apple, wrote that the approach is more modern. It does not allow the cross-site tracking of users, but does provide a way to measure the effectiveness of online ads. The technology, based on something called Privacy Preserving Ad Click Attribution, “is built into the browser itself and runs on-device, which means that the browser vendor does not get to see what ads are clicked or which purchases are made,” added Wilander. DIGITAL DATA Streaming service Fox Nation is rolling out a slate of programs, including new shows with Fox News Channel contributors Tyrus, Kat Timpf, Tammy Bruce and Lawrence Jones. Nuffsaid features Tyrus interviewing big names each week, including John Rich of Big & Rich, Snoop Dogg, former MLB all-star Cal Ripken Jr. and more. In Sincerely Kat, described as a “Dear Abby program for millennials,” Timpf discusses politics, pop culture and relationships. Get Tammy Bruce explores Bruce’s thoughts on identity politics and the week’s biggest cultural stories. Keeping up with Jones showcases Jones debating issues with a different guest each week. Man on the Street is an extension of Jones’ segments of the same name for FNC’s Hannity. The new additions will begin rolling out to subscribers the week of Monday, June 10. Netflix released The Unauthorized Bash Brothers Experience, featuring Andy Samberg and Akiva Shaffer as MLB home run hitting duo Jose Conseco and Mark McGwire, honoring the 30th anniversary of the Oakland Athletics’ 1989 championship season. The short film is available in all 190 countries where Netflix is available.
