TECH TALK There’s a new way to keep up to date on the news, solutions and deals that are disrupting the media industry. Check out Cynopsis’ online TechFronts guide: http://www.cynopsis.com/techfronts/. Starting June 25, support for the Xfinity On Demand app will end on TiVo. “The current platform connecting your TiVo to Xfinity On Demand runs on an out-of-date technology that cannot be upgraded or updated,” said Comcast. The companies have skirmished over a patent dispute since a licensing deal expired in 2016; TiVo most recently filed a patent complaint against Comcast earlier this month. Best Buy canceled pre-orders for the Samsung Galaxy Fold phone. While the retailer called the device “one of the most beautiful pieces of mobile engineering in a long time” on its customer support page, “a plethora of unforeseen hiccups” led to the cancellation call. The phone’s release date has been delayed since design flaws were noted by early reviewers. Facebook drew criticism for not taking down (as YouTube did) a doctored video of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi that made it appear she was slurring her words at an event. Facebook reviewers did acknowledge the video as false, and the social media giant reduced its distribution and added an explanatory article in news feeds where it appeared, COMING UP ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live: Game Night episodes return for the 12th consecutive year during prime time every night of the NBA Finals, beginning with Game One on Thursday, May 30. DIGITAL DATA The International Trade Commission agreed to investigate a complaint filed by Rovi’s covering patents related to Comcast’s X1 platform. “For more than a decade, Comcast partnered with Rovi to enable its customers to watch what they want, when they want on TV,” said Arvin Patel, EVP and chief intellectual property officer at Rovi. “However, because Comcast refuses to pay licensing fees to use our technology, its customers are being charged more for fewer features, including no access to critical DVR features.” Comcast called the litigation attempt “meritless.” As Disney, WarnerMedia and NBCUniversal prepare to launch new streaming services, Hub Research released it Best Bundle survey, in which 24% of respondents said they felt they had too many online TV subscriptions. That’s up from 14% in 2018. But while one third of those surveyed said they would drop at least one subscription before adding a new one, 64% said they’d keep all their subs even if they add a new service. MEASUREMENT Among challenges that need to be overcome to achieve a unified measurement approach is inertia, says George Musi, EVP of Marketing Sciences for Publicis OneTeam – Citi, and a featured speaker at the Cynopsis Measurement & Data Conference . Other challenges, notes Musi, include: *Impact on resources, cost of doing business and changes in process and systems *The debate over what a new ad impression standard should represent – just exposure or impact on a business outcome *The question of whether true ad duration can be measured and should the quality of exposure be the same for each platform *How will this impact proprietary measures which many want to preserve *The word currency may be too rigid for some who believe that different media require different measures *The adoption of co-viewing impression— whether more than one person was in the room to see an ad on a single screen Musi will be speaking on the panel, “Taking it In-House: How Brands Are Measureing and Interpreting Data Themselves” at the June 11 event. Dave Morgan, CEO Simulmedia, made headlines recently when he resigned from the board of the ARF, citing the need for bolder action in fixing ad measurement. According to Morgan, “We do not have a trusted way to measure the basics of impression reach and frequency across channels, even just the big media channels like linear TV, digital banners, digital video and radio.” He shares his views to clarify his position in Cynsiders. GOING GLOBAL ABC Studios International and Endemol Shine are teaming for an adaptation of coming-of-age novel Goodwood for Australia’s ABC. Alice Bell and Claudia Karvan will produce. Netflix ordered its first Egyptian drama, an adaptation of Ahmed Khaled’s Paranormal. Suspense series is set in the 1960s. Sky Atlantic ordered season three of crime thriller Riviera, starring Julia Styles. |
