ADVERTISING 81% of marketers named the unskippable 6-second pre-roll as the best digital video ad formant, in a study by Adweek and GumGum. 27% of respondents described them as very effective, and 54 said they were effective. The three biggest digital video advertising challenges? Annoyed viewers (55%), ineffective creative (46%) and ad skipping (43%). DIGITAL DATA Mary Meeker’s internet trends report for the Code Conference last week said growth of smartphone unit shipments had stalled in 2017, while internet user growth was just 7% for the year, versus 12% in 2016. Stillerman had joined Hulu a year ago from AMC Networks; his job has been eliminated. Hulu’s technology and product organizations will be combined under new chief technology officer Dan Phillips, previously COO of TiVo. Jaya Kolhatkar, most recently SVP of global and data analytics platforms for Walmart, has been named to the newly created role of chief data officer. Facebook finally figured out how to deal with its Trending Topics section, which faced criticism first for curators who allegedly suppressed conservative news stories, and then for algorithms that ran fake or inaccurate items - the social media giant is deleting it. “We found that over time people found the product to be less and less useful,” said Alex Hardiman, head of news products, in a blog post, adding that Facebook is testing other ways to draw attention to breaking news.
