Good morning, this is your first early-morning briefing.
Tonight's Premieres: Discovery: Fast N’ Loud at 9p Snap: BTW Univision: Amor Eterno at p VH1: Scream at 9p IN THE NEWS There was a change of plans for History’s Evel Live 2 on Sunday, due to freestyle motocross athlete Axell Hodges crashing during a practice jump and severely injured both ankles prior to the live show. “Having a crash ahead of something you’ve been working so hard toward just plain sucks,” said Hodges. “The team and I were making a lot of progress during testing and the distances we were approaching looked good for Sunday’s event. Unfortunately, I made a mistake in air and wasn’t able to adjust in time for landing. I’m shocked I’m not in worse shape." Footage of the crash, as well as a different daredevil’s motorcycle firewall stunt, was planned in place of Hodges’ live attempt. Univision Communications Inc. confirmed its Board of Directors is “reviewing strategic options for the company.” Said the board in a statement, “After a successful year under the leadership of our new management team, including a complete refocus on our core Spanish-language media business, it is abundantly clear that Univision’s strategic value has never been greater…. As the last major independent broadcast media company in the U.S., a market where scale and strength matter, Univision has the fundamentals for continued growth on its own or with a partner.” Univision’s statement came after the Wall Street Journal reported the company was exploring options, including a possible sale. Over 120 Nexstar-owned stations in 97 markets went dark just before midnight on Thursday after Nexstar and AT&T were unable to come to terms on a new distribution agreement. “Nexstar has removed its channels from your lineup even though we offered Nextstar more money to keep they available to you,” AT&T told customers, while Nextstar said AT&T “unilaterally dropped the network” and refused to extend its existing agreement until August 2. WarnerMedia reported double digit increases in digital spend for its now-completed upfront deals, while maintaining its linear spend, according to MediaPost. The marketplace responded favorably to the company’s portfolio of brands and advertising capabilities, said WarnerMedia, with a tip of the hat to AT&T sib, advance TV advertising business Xandr. Facebook is cracking down on false claims about medical treatments. “Misleading health content is particularly bad for our community,” Travis Yeh, a Facebook product manager, wrote in a blog post. Two ranking updates were made to reduce posts with exaggerated or sensational health claims, and posts attempting to sell products or services based on health-related claims. Amazon, Netflix and several Hollywood studios are asking for millions of dollars in damages from SET TV, according to TorrentFreak. When an anti-piracy alliance sued the IPTV service last year, the company denied copyright infringement allegations and said it had stopped offering the service, but failed to respond to a request for a deposition. Hence, a filing for an entry of default. “Set Broadcast has willfully infringed Plaintiffs’ Copyrighted Works and, in doing so, caused Plaintiffs and their entire business model immense damage,” reads the motion. “The $7,650,000 statutory damages sought here therefore represents only a fraction of the actual damages inflicted by Set Broadcast on Plaintiffs.” The Competitive Carriers Association, Charter Communications and ACA Connects – America’s Communications Association have filed a proposal with the FCC that it calls a “win-win” for incumbent users of the C-Band spectrum for 5G and prospective providers of 5G wireless. In the proposal, at least 30 megahertz of the C-Band spectrum would be repurposed for 5G, “the first time that incumbents and prospective new licensees have come together on an industry-designed plan for repurposing the C-Band, which is critically important to winning the global race to 5G,” said the group in a statement. “Today’s joint filing is significant progress and demonstrates industry’s willingness to work together to ensure the repurposing of the C-Band spectrum is done right,” said CCA President and CEO Steve Berry, adding that mid-band spectrum provides real opportunities for competitive carriers to enhance and expand their networks, especially in rural areas. TECH TALK The price of Sony’s PlayStation Vue tiers is on the rise. New customers will take the hit now, while existing customers can keep their current price for at least 30 days. “With costs rising each year for content, we constantly evaluate each deal to ensure we continue to deliver the content you want while considering the overall value of each package,” the company told its customers. “After reviewing this, we have made the decision to raise the price of all of our multi-channel plans by $5.” French startup Karamel aims to help keep kids busy with a mobile app that lets users find and book nearby child-friendly activities. The company just raised $560,000 and is currently live in Paris. Focusing on digital is paying off for Univision, says Sameer Dean, Chief Digital Officer, in Cynsiders. STREAMING Where there’s smoke, there’s ire: After a report from anti-smoking group Truth Initiative blasted season two of Netflix’s Stranger Things for having the most depictions of smoking (100% of episodes included tobacco use), the streamer said all new shows it commissions with ratings of TV-14 or below will exclude smoking and e-cigarette use, except for reasons of historical or factual accuracy. Netflix also said starting later this year, its ratings will include smoking information. What would happen if Netflix offered an ad-based subscription plan, in addition to its current ad-free plan? According to Hub’s new “Monetization of Video” study, viewers would be open to the idea – if it included a significant discount. Almost a quarter of subscribers said they’d drop Netflix if it included ads for the same price they pay now, but at $3/month less than they currently pay, only 12% would likely drop the streamer. “The success of any Netflix ad-supported plan - whether to replace or add to its current offering - will naturally depend on whether consumers feel they’re getting a sufficient price-break return on their ad-viewing investment,” said Peter Fondulas, principal at Hub and co-author of the study. “But one thing is clear from these results: after one increase already in 2019, any attempt by Netflix to use an ad-supported plan as a reason to hike its ad-free price again could seriously backfire.” GOING GLOBAL Woodcut Media announced a fourth season of true crime series Britain’s Most Evil Killers and its international counterpart World’s Most Evil Killers. Season Four is scheduled to air in the UK and Ireland on Sky. COMING UP
