STREAMING The news that Netflix lost about 130,000 U.S. subscribers, and added 2.7 million new subs globally versus a projected 5 million, had the streamer’s shares drop over 10% on Thursday. While the miss isn’t unprecedented, concerns about upcoming OTT services from Disney, NBCU, HBO/Warner and Apple have some analysts on edge. “We do expect consumers to jump on and off these services more frequently, which may lead to more sub volatility over time,” wrote Macquarie Research’s Tim Nollen in a note to clients. On the other hand, other analysts brushed aside concerns. “Did the world change in the last three months?” asked Morgan Stanley in a note. “We do not believe it did. Moreover, layering in the second-half guide leaves our full-year estimates largely unchanged. If it delivers, 2019 will be another year of record net adds and nearly double-digit ARPU (average revenue per user) growth.” Netflix said it expects a return to growth in 3Q19, with a boost from the return of Stranger Things. Netflix also reports it has a deal for AT&T’s upcoming streaming service. “We recently entered into a new partnership with AT&T in the US to integrate Netflix into their new set-top box,” said the streamer in a letter to shareholders.
