Good morning, this is your first early-morning briefing.
Tonight’s Premieres: Netflix: Another Life IN THE NEWS HBO will up the number of hours of original programming by about 10% in 2020, said HBO head of programming Casey Bloys at TCA. But it’s still about quality, not quantity. With the addition of Monday night programming, “The big challenge for me and our team is to ensure that we weren’t just filling hours to fill hours,” said Bloys. “We have a lot more programming but there’s not one show that I wouldn’t have aired one year or five years ago.” Bloys also addressed the backlash received by the finale of HBO’s Game of Thrones. “There are very few downsides to having an immensely popular show, but one that I can think of is when you try to end it,” he said of the series, which wrapped on May 19. In any case, Bloys added, “Thirty-two Emmy nominations is nice validation.” TV Land renewed Younger for season seven. No surprise there – last month, the series had its highest-rated season premiere ever among P25-54 and W25-54 and was up +23% among total viewers, with 1.3 million tuning in. The series remains the top sitcom in cable for the third year in a row among W25-54 and W18-49. Also back for another run is Animal Kingdom, headed for season five on TNT. Drama starring Ellen Barkin hit nearly 18 million viewers across platforms for season four, and ranks as one of the year’s top ten cable dramas among A18-49. As its carriage dispute with AT&T continues, CBS reported a “dramatic spike in new subscribers” to CBS All Access, and said over 250,000 calls have come to a special telephone hotline for the viewers of CBS stations in the 14 markets that went dark. CBS also said it “remains ready and available to negotiate” to get back on DirecTV, DirecTV Now and U-verse – this despite AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson’s contention earlier that his company had heard “crickets” from CBS since its last offer five days ago. In more AT&T news, the company reported a loss of 946,000 video subscribers for DirecTV and DirecTV now in 2Q19. Still, video entertainment revenue was down just 1.7%, to $8.03 billion. Walt Disney Co. and the creators of Home Improvement settled a lawsuit, filed in 2013, weeks before the case was to go to trial. Wind Dancer Production Group, Matt Williams, Carmen Finestra, David McFadzean and Tam O’Shanter Productions accused Disney of selling syndication rights below the 1991-99 sitcom’s market value, and improperly accounting their share of profits. The amount of the settlement was not disclosed. Does Netflix’s negative earnings news signal an impending crisis, or is it just a blip? What does it mean for the streaming landscape? Cynopsis talked to one expert about a topic that will get plenty of play at the September 9-10 Big TV Conference. NYF’s Television & Film Awards are open for entries. The FTC also mandated that Facebook create an independent privacy committee on its board of directors to remove “infettered control” by CEO Mark Zuckerberg. In separate action on Wednesday, the Securities and Exchange Commission announced it is charging Facebook with making misleading disclosures about the risk of misused user data. Facebook will pay $100 million to settle the charges, an SEC record. Was $5 billion a drop in the bucket for Facebook?
