Trifecta Entertainment & Media is launching the hidden camera prank series as two weekly half-hours in September, with 93% of the country cleared. Netflix renewed Trinkets for a second and final season. The sophomore run of the YA series about three high school girls, based on the Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith novel, is slated to launch in 2020. Cord-cutting has become “freaking ugly,” in the words of Michael Nathanson in a report from MoffettNathanson on media companies. Based on quarterly numbers, the rate of traditional cord-cutting will reach 5.5% in 2019, the worst it has ever been, said Nathanson, who continued, “Even adding back virtual MVPD subscribers, the drop will be 2.7%, a new low.” On the other hand, over the last five years the length of time each viewer spends on a network has increased, from 28.1 minutes to 32.2 minutes for broadcast, and from 20.4 minutes to 23.7 minutes (likely because the people who have not cut the cord are the most devoted TV viewers). Nets that have grown both in reach and length of tune include INSP, Motor Trend, Discovery En Espanol and Discovery Family, noted the report. CBS Corp. and Altice struck a carriage agreement that covers retransmission consent for CBS-owned stations, Showtime, CBS Sports, Pop TV and Smithsonian Channel, and enables Altice to continue offering the Showtime digital streaming service to its broadband customers. CBS-owned stations in 14 markets remain dark on AT&T’s DirecTV, DirecTV Now and U-verse systems. PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT Norman Lear and Hamilton’s Lin-Manuel Miranda are teaming for documentary Rita Moreno: The Girl Who Decided to Go For It (wt) for PBS’s Thirteen. The film will feature interviews with Moreno, Lear, Miranda, Gloria and Emilio Estefan, Morgan Freeman, Whoopi Goldberg, Eva Longoria, Justina Machado, Terrence McNally and Chita Rivera. Lear, Miranda and Michael Kantor exec produce with Brent Miller as producer, Mariem Perez as producer and director and Ilia Velez s co-producer. “How I wish my Puerto Rican mother were alive to see this: her child’s story being celebrated by the likes of American Masters,” said Moreno. “It is not something she or I could ever have imagined.” The news was announced at TCA. PBS also set a docu-series focused on Asian-American history. Five-parter from producer Renee Tajim-Pena is being produced by WETA and the Center for Asian American Media. NEW & RETURNING SERIES A&E’s 60 Days In: Narcoland, premiering tonight, expands the franchise with a spin-off that takes the show outside of prison walls to look at the drug ecosystem. Greg Henry, an exec producer of the show, explains the shift. “In brainstorming ways to shed new light on the drug epidemic in America, we turned to the approach that’s been so effective with 60 Days In,” Henry tells Cynopsis. “Embedding outsiders into communities that have been overrun with drug trafficking, in essence, allows us to thrust the audience directly into the middle of a critical situation. In addition to perspective from law enforcement and those incarcerated for drug-related offenses, viewers are given a new vantage point through our undercover participants, as they meet the real people who are both fueling and fighting the crisis, and witness first-hand its devastating effects on America’s heartland.” HGTV’s buzzed-about overhaul of the Brady Bunch house will be unveiled during A Very Brady Renovation, launching Monday, September 9 at 9p. The six Bunch-ers, Barry Williams (Greg), Maureen McCormick (Marcia),Christopher Knight (Peter), Eve Plumb (Jan), Mike Lookinland (Bobby) and Susan Olsen (Cindy) joined network experts Jonathan and Drew Scott (Property Brothers), Mina Starsiak Hawk and Karen E Laine (Good Bones), Leanne and Steve Ford (Restored by the Fords), Jasmine Roth (Hidden Potential) and Lara Spencer (Flea Market Flip), to execute the project. “HGTV left no stone unturned, creating a perfect replica of the home down to the horse statue next to the staircase and the stuffed animal giraffe in the girls’ bedroom,” said net president Jane Latman. Travel Channel has two series premieres on tap for next month: Newcomer Ghost Brothers: Haunted Houseguests makes its appearance Friday, August 16 at 9p, and season four of Mountain Monsters premieres Wednesday, August 21 at 9p. INSP’s Ultimate Cowboy Showdown premieres Monday, October 14 at 9p. Six-night event series will be hosted by country music’s Trace Adkins. “The debut of Ultimate Cowboy Showdown ushers in the next phase in INSP’s programming strategy,” said VP of original programming Craig Miller. “As a network with a proven track record of rating success with Western-themed programming, adding a competition series, featuring cowboys, to our slate is a natural progression.” Sasha Velour, winner of season nine of RuPaul’s Drag Race, will be featured in a new series for upcoming short-form digital service, Quibi. Eight-part Nightgowns will follow Velour and other performers as they prepare for show time. Ready for your next career move (or just curious)? To check out all the opportunities from the past few weeks, visit the Cynopsis Jobs Site. Soap opera Days of Our Lives is launching Days of Our Lives: The Digital Series. Eight-episode offering follows a popular couple from the daytimer, starting Thursday, August 1. New PBS KIDS programming starting next month includes the premiere of Pinkalicious and Peterrific: A Pinkaperfect Birthday (August 5), the first one-hour special from the series; back-to-back brand-new episodes of Dinosaur Train (August 26); and a special Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood “Family Week,” featuring the debut of five episodes, starting September 16. Also on PBS, Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates. Jr. returns for season six on Tuesday, October 8 at 8p (check local listings). The Fall 2019 season will premiere with two new episodes followed by five encore presentations. Season Six will return in early 2020 with eight weeks of new episodes featuring both new guests and re-mixed thematic combinations of former participants’ stories. COMING UP The 25th anniversary of the premiere of Friends will be marked by an NYC pop-up experience in September. From Superfly, Warner Bros. Consumer Products and Warner Bros. Television Group, the space will offer fans the chance to explore iconic props and re-creations (turkey on your head, anyone?) from the series’ run. Ovation TV will air legacy episodes from Inside the Actors Studio leading to the new season premiere on October 13. One James Lipton-led ep will air every Sunday at 12p, starting August 11. George W. Bush will be the subject of a two-part doc for PBS’ American Experience, debuting in spring 2020. “What makes George W. Bush such a fascinating subject is that he was one of the least prepared presidents in our history, yet faced some of the greatest challenges,” said filmmaker Barak Goodman. “Not since Lincoln has such an inexperienced leader been called upon in a moment of genuine existential crisis. How Bush evolved in office under these pressures - at first struggling mightily, but later finding his feet - illuminates not only his character, but the evolving nature of power and the presidency in an increasingly dangerous world.” STREAMING PBS struck a carriage agreement with YouTube, a first for the public broadcasting network. YouTube TV will livestream all of the 330 PBS member stations that opt in. “As a broadcaster that is rooted in communities, we appreciate YouTube’s commitment to local content, and we are pleased that this service provides audiences with access to programming that is produced and distributed by our member stations,” said PBS head digital and marketing officer Ira Rubenstein. As the streaming media market matures and approaches saturation, sales increasingly come at another vendor’s expense, according to a report from Parks Associates, “360 Deep Dive: Adoption and Use of Connected Video Devices,” necessitating a shift from hardware sales to advertising revenue. “Video-quality features are the most important factors when consumers buy a connected video device, although Roku and Amazon have certainly benefited among streaming media players by having broad product portfolios that include lower price points,” said Senior Analyst Kristen Hanich. FilmRise has teamed up with Sling TV to add free AVOD content to the service. Sling TV users on Roku devices can now watch programming from FilmRise on the platform, even if they are not a base service subscriber. Sling Orange and/or Sling Blue subscribers will automatically see FilmRise available as a channel in their Sling TV channel guide, and Sling users on Roku devices can access FilmRise content for free by opening the Sling app and selecting “browse as guest.” TECH TALK As part of Amazon’s expansion of services to connected TV devices, all APS-integrated CTV apps can now execute such deals with advertisers and agencies using Amazon’s advanced TV PMP service and the demand-side platforms Amazon DSP, dataxu TouchPoint, and The Trade Desk. The aim is to allow media buyers to maximize reach, avoid repeat ads and ensure fee transparency. MobiTV and Amino Communications are combining the MobiTV Connect app-based TV platform solution with the AminoOS Enable operating system to give operators new options for expanding their video services using existing devices. “By enabling operators to offer exciting next generation services such as MobiTV with a relatively modest additional investment, we’re extending the life of installed devices: a highly significant CAPEX benefit,” said Amino CEO Donald McGarva. Viamedia announced the launch of QTT, a patent pending technology aimed at growing cable TV ad dollars by tapping into the programmatic digital advertising marketplace. In market trials this summer, QTT enables digital supply side platforms and their demand side platform partners to dynamically access linear cable TV inventory in real time. QTT’s breakthrough is converting a standard SCTE 35 cue tone into an IAB-compliant VAST ad request infused with rich content and audience metadata for segmentation and targeting. ADVERTISING 2Q19 national cable TV ad revenue was up 1%, to $5.7 billion, while broadcast slipped 1%, to $3.2 billion, according to MoffettNathanson Research. Among cable’s biggest winners were Discovery (up 4.1% to $1.1 billion) and Viacom ((up 4% to $961 million). GOING GLOBAL Mediacorp will premiere season two of the local adaptation of Nippon TV’s unscripted format Old Enough! on National Day, August 9 at 9:30p with a one-hour special starring celebrity parents and their children. CASTING Genevieve Angelson (Good Girls Revolt) has joined the season two cast of DC Universe’s Titans...Cristin Milioti (USS Callister) will star in HBO Max drama Made for Love. DISTRIBUTION Gusto Worldwide Media announced that DNA Dinners and 9 holiday specials have been acquired by UP Faith & Family.
