Friedman shared his decision with the staffs of both productions on Thursday, gathering the group on the JEOPARDY! stage. “I think all of you know how much I love these shows, and that I deeply respect how hard you’ve worked to make them so successful,” Friedman said when he addressed his team. “We’ve celebrated a lot of milestones together, and now with my own personal 25th anniversary milestone just a few months away, it felt like this was the right time for me to step away. Please join me in making this the best season yet.” Netflix drama 13 Reasons Why will be back for a fourth and final season. The SVOD service announced the news of the show’s renewal - and end - ahead of its Season 3 launch on Friday, August 23. The status of talks between CBS and James Corden on a new deal for him to return as host and EP of The Late Late Show with James Corden was addressed by CBS Entertainment President Kelly Kahl and Senior EVP Thom Sherman at the network’s TCA executive session on Thursday. “We are very much hoping to work with James Corden for a long, long time,” said Kahl. Corden’s current contract runs through the upcoming 2019-2020 season. Kahl also revealed that the fate of The World’s Best, the CBS entertainment format hosted by Corden, has yet to be decided. However, if it was picked up the broadcaster would “tweak the format.” The talent competition series, which featured judges Drew Barrymore, Faith Hill and RuPaul, struggled to hold much of its audience since debuting after the Super Bowl. Meanwhile, there was news on Michael Weatherly. Kahl noted that the Bull star was receiving “leadership coaching,” while showrunner Glenn Gordon Caron was also in “leadership training.” Kahl explained that the non-mandatory counseling the two men are getting focuses on “how to be a positive example for everyone” on set. CBS paid a multi-million dollar settlement to Eliza Dushku, last year, over sexual harassment allegations against Weatherly and her axing from the series in apparent retaliation. CBS renewed Love Island for season two, as the romance reality show approaches the wrap-up of its five-days-a-week freshman run. While the series has averaged under a 0.5 rating and 2 million viewers, “The passion of Love Island’s audience is incredible,” said Kelly Kahl, who announced the pickup at TCA. “The intensity of their social media engagement has created tremendous enthusiasm for the series here at the Network. We love the show’s creative execution and can’t wait for next season.” Having completed nine seasons on Everybody Loves Raymond and The Middle, actress Patricia Heaton was asked at TCA whether she hoped for a similar run for her upcoming CBS comedy, Carol’s Second Act. “My perfect scenario, as I see death getting near, is that I’d die on a sound stage, that’s how I want to go,” said Heaton. “Just as long as I’ve had full hair and make-up.” Some guest stars on CBS’s upcoming supernatural drama Evil will look familiar to The Good Wife and The Good Fight fans, starting with John Glover. At TCA, showrunners Robert and Michelle King said they don’t expect regular cast members of their other shows to appear. But, “actors that have appeared as guest cast on The Good Wife and The Good Fight, we’re thrilled to bring on to Evil,” said Michelle King at TCA. “That’s one of the most exciting things about doing Evil because on The Good Wife and The Good Fight, we’ve held that the world is real so if someone appeared as a doctor, we’re not going to bring them on years later as a shoemaker. There are all these wonderful actors who, after ten years of being in that universe, we’ve used and the fact that we can use them again is wonderful.” There’s a crossover episode in the works between Season 3 of Hulu’s Marvel’s Runaways and Freeform’s Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger. While no details are available yet, Jeph Loeb, EP and head of Marvel Television said, “It’s so fun being able to do something that revels in the Mighty Marvel Manner! Having these young heroes cross over allows fans of both shows to see the adventure everyone has been waiting for and we’ve only hinted at.” Alfonso Ribeiro (America’s Funniest Videos) was named host of Game Show Network’s reboot Catch 21 with Witney Carson (Dancing With the Stars) joining as card dealer, reuniting the former dance partners. The half-hour series, a blend of pop trivia and the classic card game 21, is slated to bow in Fall 2019. In other game show news, actor Adam Scott was tapped to host Don’t on ABC. Executive produced by Ryan Reynolds, the show offers contestants the chance to team up with their family and friends and win up to $100,000. The Kennedy Center set the talent lineup for its Mark Twain Prize for American Humor gala, which is honoring Dave Chappelle. Bradley Cooper, Tiffany Haddis, Kevin Hart, Trevor Noah, Jon Stewart, John Legend and Chrissy Teigen will be on hand for the October 27 event at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Manhattan. The Ruderman Family Foundation recognized two television series for its Seal of Authentic Representation: Ramy, a Hulu comedy based on the life of comedian Ramy Youssef, which features his best friend in real life and on the show, Steve Way, who has muscular dystrophy; and The Close, the SundanceTV drama about a couple who are deaf, created by and starring deaf actors Shoshannah Stern and Josh Feldman.
Aaaargh! Piracy is a major issue for the media industry, and it’s a challenge being addressed by Friend MTS, provider of channel content protection. Simon Williamson, Chief Commercial Officer and a speaker at That Big TV Conference September 9-10 in NYC, talked to Cynopsis about the piracy plague, and how companies can batten down the hatches. “In an ever-changing media landscape and with streaming and cord cutting on the rise, piracy continues to pose a threat to high-value premium content ranging from OTT live sporting events to big entertainment premieres and finales,” said Williamson. “Pirates have become much more sophisticated and require a significantly increased level of technical complexity to defeat them. Friend MTS' comprehensive, scalable, technology-driven anti-piracy services directly address the surge in streaming piracy that is resulting from the increased availability of piracy devices and apps delivering stolen content.” For more from Williamson, go to Cynsiders. |

TECH TALK Google has been testing new app Google Play Pass, a subscription bundle that gives users access to premium apps for one monthly price. It promises users “all play, no interruptions,” according to a promotional graphic discovered by Android Police. While a Google spokesperson confirmed the company is testing the subscription, no further information was revealed. The app costs $4.99 per month and offers access to “hundreds of premium apps and games without ads, download fees or in-app purchases.” Google also announced that as part of its efforts to make Search work better for users, a new algorithm update improves its systems’ understanding of what information remains useful over time and what becomes out-of-date. This is particularly helpful for featured snippets, writes Pandu Nayak, Google’s VP for Search, referring to the feature in Search that highlights pages that Google systems determine are most likely to have the information users are looking for. “For queries where fresh information is important, our systems will try to find the most useful and up-to-date featured snippets,” said Nayak, citing as examples tax information or the winner of a reality show.
