Lee Daniels Entertainment grabbed spy novel The Spook Who Sat By the Door for TV series development with Fox 21 Television Studios. Fictional story focuses on the first African American CIA officer. WE tv is gearing up for more divas, renewing Bridezillas after the wedding planning reboot earned double-digit ratings growth over the course of its return season. New 10-episode season will premiere in 2019. Netflix and CBC ordered season three of Anne with an E, the coming-of-age story inspired by Anne of Green Gables from Northwood Entertainment. Production is underway in Atlanta for TV One’s new original holiday film, Coins For Christmas, starring Essence Atkins (Marlon) as a single mother struggling to make ends meet two weeks before Christmas. Film is set to debut in December. Pilgrim Media Group inked a development deal with game show producers Michael Canter and Jeff Krask (Family Feud, Deal or No Deal) to develop and produce an array of project for broadcast, cable and digital platforms. The first two series to emerge from the deal are already set up at a broadcast net. NEW & RETURNING SERIES Big Bad Boo Studios’ new kids show 16 Hudson will debut across Canada this fall with 39 X 7-minute episodes and 3 holiday specials. The animated preschool series premieres on TVOKids in the greater Ontario region on August 21, followed by Knowledge Kids on September 3rd. The third and final season of Versailles debuts on Ovation Saturday, October 6 at 10p. El Rey Network unscripted series Man at Arms: Art of War returns for season two Thursday, October 4 at 8p, with Danny Trejo (Sons of Anarchy) back as host. Also returning for season two is Cartoon Network’s Craig of the Creek, set to launch in 2019. New episodes of the current season premiere Monday, August 20 at 4p. Amazon animated series Pete the Cat, featuring music from spouses Elvis Costello and Diana Krall, premieres Friday, September 21. A new season of Animal Planet’s North Woods Law (not to be confused with the net’s Northwest Law, premiering tonight at 10p) debuts Sunday, August 19 at 9p, following New Hampshire conservation officers. ADVERTISING Global consumer and ad spend on TV and video will jump from $490 billion in 2017 to $559 billion in 2022, projects Strategy Analytics, with spend on OTT making up 90% of the growth. “OTT TV and video services will be the driving force behind future revenue,” said Michael Goodman, director, television & media strategies. “However, traditional TV and video services should not despair too much, as they will continue to account for the majority of consumer and advertising spend for the foreseeable future.” Done deal: AT&T announced that its acquisition of ad tech firm AppNexus is complete. The plan is for AT&T to integrate first-party data from mobile and TV customers with its WarnerMedia and Otter Media content; details to come at the company’s late September conference. Meredith Corp.’s people-based ad tech company, Viant, launched an enhanced suite of capabilities for CPG marketers through its expanded partnership with IRI. Viant’s new Sales Tactic Optimization solution provides advertisers with weekly insights throughout the campaign, identifying the top performing segments driving actual lift. In addition, Viant has launched Purchase Cycle Targeting so CPG marketers can hone in on the unique purchase cycles of their various products, and deliver messaging at the likely points of repurchase. “A Look Under the Hood,” a study from the Video Advertising Bureau, found 76% of auto brands showed a direct correlation between TV spend and website traffic; brands that increased their TV investment on average spent 15% more on TV for a 48% increase in unique website visitors. Endemol Shine North America and The Miss Universe Organization struck a deal to work together on commercial initiatives in the United States. Endemol Shine’s LA-based team will seek opportunities with Miss Universe, Miss USSA and Miss Teen USA, including on-air integrations, off-channel sponsorships and promotions, digital initiatives and licensing extensions. DIGITAL As regulatory approval for games has become trickier to obtain, China’s Tencent reported its net profit for the second quarter dropped 2% to $2.7 billion. Revenues rose rose 30%, but missed analysts’ forecasts. Online games make up one third of the company’s revenue. Customers buying Verizon’s 5G in-home internet service later this year in select cities will have a choice of a free subscription to the YouTube TV app, or an Apple TV 4K streaming box. Customers will also have access to NFL and NBA games and news programs through Verizon’s Oath, reports Bloomberg. The news follows Verizon’s decision not to proceed with its own online TV offering. On HGTV, Flip or Flop’s digital content has led to 8 million video views across Facebook and Instagram with current ratings 18% ahead of the prior season. RATINGS Fox, MTV and Comedy Central were the only nets to show a gain in viewership in July versus the same month last year, according to MoffettNathanson Research. Primetime TV viewership dropped 12% for the month, with broadcast dipping 10% and cable down 13% in Nielsen C3 A18-49. Fox rose 5% with a World Cup boost, Comedy Central added 16,000 total viewers and MTV grew by 4,000. From Aug 5-8 at 9p, Nat Geo’s Yellowstone Live attracted 13 million total viewers across National Geographic and Nat Geo WILD during its multi-platform run. The first night on National Geographic, Yellowstone Live ranked as one of the top 10 most-watched shows on ad-supported cable for all key demos, including P25-54 (578,000), M25-54 (329,000), and total viewers P2+ (1.9 million).
