Viola Davis is heading to the White House. The actress will portray Michelle Obama in First Ladies, a drama series being developed at Showtime with a three-script commitment. Davis will also executive produce the project, from writer Aaron Cooley (novels Four Seats: A Thriller of the Supreme Court, The Guns of Ridgewood).  
 
ABC News announced details of the third Democratic Debate in Houston. The primetime event, in partnership with Univision, will air Thursday, September 12 and, if necessary, Friday, September 13, from Texas Southern University. ABC News chief anchor George Stephanopoulos, World News Tonight anchor and managing editor David Muir, ABC News correspondent Linsey Davis and Univision anchor Jorge Ramos will moderate.
 
Season 45 of NBC’s Saturday Night Live premieres September 28. Woody Harrelson will serve as host for the fourth time, with Billie English debuting as musical guest. The following week, on October 5, Phoebe Waller-Bridge will make her SNL hosting debut, while Taylor Swift will make her third appearance as musical guest. Other hosts scheduled this season include David Harbour, Kristen Stewart and Eddie Murphy.
 
Family Feud is going international. Steve Harvey announced plans to launch and host versions of the Fremantle game show in South Africa and Ghana. Harvey’s media company Steve Harvey Global obtained rights to license the format for African versions of the game show, which will be produced Rapid Blue, Fremantle’s local production partner in the region. Harvey has hosted the American version of Family Feud since 2010.
 
Former Vice President Joe Biden is set to appear on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Wednesday, September 4 at 11:30p on CBS. It marks the Democratic front-runner’s first late-night interview since launching his campaign in April.
 
Keke Palmer officially debuted as co-host of the third hour of Good Morning America on Monday, joining Michael Strahan and Sara Haines. Palmer had been taking a significant role on the ABC morning show in recent months The block will  be renamed GMA3: Strahan, Sara & Keke.
 
Meanwhile, GMA co-host Lara Spencer offered an official on-air apology on Monday for last week’s remark mocking six-year-old Prince George’s interest in ballet. “I screwed up,” said Spencer. “The comment I made about dance was insensitive, it was stupid, and I am deeply sorry.”  
 
Sandra Oh will narrate She Walks With Apes for Canada’s CBC. The two-hour documentary about three women who went in the jungles of Africa and Borneo includes rarely seen images of Dian Fossey, the scientist murdered while working with mountain gorillas in Rwanda, and features Canadian Birute Galdikas, who went to live among the orangutans of Borneo 50 years ago.
 
Final nominees for The 54rd Annual CMA Awards will be revealed Wednesday, August 28 with select categories announced live on ABC’s Good Morning America by Jimmie Allen and Ashley McBryde in the 8a hour. Carrie Underwood will host the award show, airing live from Bridgestone Arena in Nashville on Wednesday, 13 at 8p on ABC, with special guest hosts Reba McEntire and Dolly Parton, celebrating legendary.

Calls continue urging the reopening of a toll-free hotline for detained immigrants that was shut down after it was featured in an episode of Orange Is The New Black. California-based Freedom for Immigrants says the hotline was shut down on August 7, about two weeks after the July 26 premiere of the Netflix series final season. “The timing of the shutdown is deeply concerning. Freedom for Immigrants is being targeted for exposing abuses in detention and amplifying the stories of people suffering in the system,” said Christina Fialho, an attorney and executive director of Freedom for Immigrants in a statement. In response, an ICE official told NBC News via a statement that “all ICE facilities provide detainees with reasonable and equitable access to telephones.”

Freeform has begun production on Wrap Battle, a six-episode holiday gift-wrapping series where contestants compete to become the ultimate wrapper and take home a grand prize valued at $50,000. Sheryl Underwood will host, with Carson Kressley and Wanda Wen (founder of fine stationery and luxury paper brand Soolip) serving as judges.
 
Hulu ordered Woke, a live-action comedy pilot with animated sequences. The project, which reportedly stars Lamorne Morris (New Girl), hails from Sony Pictures TV, Will Gluck’s studio-based Olive Bridge Entertainment and Eric Christian Olsen’s Cloud Nine Prods and is based on the life and art of cartoonist Keith Knight.
 
Will Forte (The Last Man On Earth) and Kaitlin Olson (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) are set to star in comedy series Flipped, from Groundlings alums Steve Mallory and Damon Jones and Funny or Die, for short-form video platform Quibi. Eva Longoria (Desperate Housewives), Arturo Castro (Alternatino) and Andy Garcia also star in the series ,which began production on Monday. The project, written by Mallory and Jones, focuses on chronically underemployed couple Jann (Forte) and Cricket Melfi (Olson), self-proclaimed home renovation “experts” who are certain they’re television’s next great home design duo.

Why We Hate debuts Sunday, October 13 at 10p on Discovery. Executive produced by Alex Gibney and Steven Spielberg, the six-part series explores one of humanity’s most primal and destructive emotions. The first episode will be available on Discovery Go on Sunday, October 6.
 
Total Divas returns on Wednesday, October 2 at 10p on E! Natalya, Naomi, Nia Jax and Carmela are back for Season 9, while Ronda Rousey and Sonya Deville have been added to the cast.
 
Nat Geo WILD is unleashing Dog: Impossible on Monday, September 2 at 9p. In the new series Matt Beisner and his team set out to prove there is no such thing as a bad dog.

Amazon Prime Video inked a distribution deal with Altice Europe, which owns French internet, mobile and cable TV provider SFR, according to Variety. It’s Amazon’s first with a telco in France and emphasizes its strategy to ramp up distribution across Europe. The agreement gives SFR customers access to the service via set-top boxes, which is the method by which French households mainly consume content.
 
In other Amazon Prime Video news, Friday, September 20 has been set as the premiere of Rihanna’s Savage X Fenty Show, featuring the singer’s new fall/winter 2019 lingerie collection. The second-annual runway show will take place during New York Fashion Week in conjunction with NYFW: The Shows and will feature models, actors and dancer wearing the latest savage styles. After airing live, this year’s Savage X Fenty Show will be available to stream exclusively on Amazon Prime Video worldwide, beginning September 20.
 
TECH TALK
 
Chinese search engine Baidu surpassed Google as the second largest smart speaker vendor. According to Canalys research firm, Baidu now owns 17.3% of the global market, while making 4.5 million shipments in the second quarter of 2019. That represents a year-on-year growth of 3.700%. Amazon still tops the smart speaker market.
 
PODCAST POSTS

Comedy Central’s The Jeselnik and Rosenthal Vanity Project is returning for a second season as part of its Global Podcast Network on Wednesday, September 4. The podcast is part of Comedy Central’s multiplatform development deal with Jeselnik, which includes the comedic interview series Good Talk with Anthony Jeselnik, premiering Friday, September 6.
 
Add Lululemon to the list of brands embracing podcasting. The athleisure brand launched a podcast called Sweatlife on Monday, created in collaboration with Makers, the Verizon Media subsidiary focused on women-centric storytelling. The podcast will feature weekly conversations with athletes, activists and others about physical and mental wellness.
 
Season 2 of The Corp by Barstool Sports bows today. Hosted by Alex Rodriguez and Dan Katz, The Corp blends stories with the biggest personalities in sports, entertainment, business and media to tell their unfiltered and never-before-heard stories relating to experiences in their fields.
