IN THE NEWS Facebook has been hit with antitrust investigations in New York, Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee and the District of Columbia. “I am proud to be leading a bipartisan coalition of attorneys general in investigating whether Facebook has stifled competition and put users at risk," said New York Attorney General Letitia James. “We will use every investigative tool at our disposal to determine whether Facebook's actions may have endangered consumer data, reduced the quality of consumers' choices, or increased the price of advertising.” A separate investigation of Google’s practices, joined by “perhaps more than 40 attorneys general,” according to the Wall Street Journal, is expected to be announced outside the U.S. Supreme Court today. In more friendly Facebook news, the social media giant launched its Facebook Dating service in the U.S. last week, allowing users to integrate Instagram posts, and by year’s end Facebook and Instagram Stories, into their Dating profiles. A “Secret Crush” feature also allows users to share a list of Facebook and Instagram followers they have their eye on, and if both users have chosen each other, they’ll be notified they’re a match. U.S. spending on podcast advertising is expected to hit $960 million in 2020 and top $1 billion in 2022, according to IPG Mediabrands’ Magna unit. “CPMs are typically higher than what is seen in the linear broadcast space, due in part to the comparatively small podcast audience and growing demand as more advertisers across more sectors show interest in experimenting with podcasts," said Magna. The base of podcast listeners is forecast to grow 36%, to 97 million U.S. listeners, by 2023. Join the evolution! In this time of relentless change in the media space, the industry needs to come together to share insights and forge alliances. That day is today. Starting at 10:30am today (and extending until tomorrow), Cynopsis is gathering thought leaders and forward thinkers to map out how best to proceed, at Cynopsis’ That Big TV Conference. There’s still time to register online, or on-site. In addition to top notch content, speakers and networking opportunities, attendees will be treated to some fun activation and contests: HGTV’s Brady Bunch Reno photo booth, Donut wall, courtesy of ListenFirst; conference swag bag; a chance to win a Big TV (LG 55”) during New York Interconnect’s Trivia contest, “You Call Yourself a New Yorker?”; each day, a winner will be chosen to receive 2 tickets (Fall 2019 BOA) to Sinclair Media Network’s MSG Suite for a Rangers or Knicks game (F&B included!); Food Network’s Dan Can Bake It will demo something BIG and delicious, with cupcake samples for all; and last but not least - grab a blueberry margarita (“The Gamut”) during tonight’s cocktail hour (sponsored by Gamut Total). Eva Longoria was one of 27 people who offered a statement to the judge sentencing Longoria’s former Desperate Housewives co-star Felicity Huffman in the college admissions scandal case. In a letter obtained by NBC News, Longoria wrote that when she started on the show, she was bullied by a co-worker. “I dreaded the days I had to work with that person because it was pure torture. Until one day, Felicity told the bully ‘enough’ and it all stopped,” shared Longoria “Felicity could feel that I was riddled with anxiety even though I never complained or mentioned the abuse to anyone.” Huffman, who pleaded guilty to mail fraud for paying $15,000 to boost her daughter’s SAT scores, is due to be sentenced on September 13. |

The study also measured trust and how it varied by demo group and forms of privacy on digital, mobile vs. PC usage, and trust in institutions. The shift in consumer attitude is a harbinger of to come as the American market faces legal restrictions not only globally from the GDPR but also nationally from the California Consumer Protection Act (CCPA), which as Paul Donato, Chief Research Officer at the ARF explains, is soon going into effect, allowing, “consumers to opt-out of the sale of their personal information to third parties, not to mention the other upcoming state and federal regulations that could impact the ad tech industry.” For more on the study, go to Cynsiders. STREAMING Imagine partners Ron Howard and Brian Grazer said the strategy of releasing films in theaters for just a few weeks before dropping them on streaming platforms can be advantageous. Speaking at the Toronto film festival, Howard said of his film version of J.D.
