ADVERTISING

Just in time for Advertising Week, Carl's Jr. and Hardee's are shaking up the value box space with a national ad campaign for $5 All Star Meals (hamburger, hot dog, fries, cookie!). And they're going right for the competition's gut. What's the thinking behind the pull-no-punches approach? "Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s are challenger brands with a history of provocative advertising, but a food story that was largely untold," new CMO Jeff Jenkins tells Cynopsis. "We created the All Star meals to offer a quality meal at an everyday price and we believe they are the best in the business, so we wanted to tell that story true to our edgy roots. Going directly after the competition makes us impossible to ignore, and gets people talking about us." For more from Jenkins, go here.

NBCUniversal will make national television inventory available for self-serve programmatic buying for launch partner Target. The effort is powered by data science and media technology company 4C.

DIGITAL DOINGS

Roma Downey and Mark Burnett are launching a new website, the first digital venture from MGM under Burnett since he became president of the Television and Digital Group. The site is an extension of Downey’s social presence, building on her production company with Burnett, Lightworkers Media. Downey spoke to Cynopsis about Lightworkers.com, devoted to bringing positivity to people’s lives. “We’re launching with almost 500 pieces of original content and if you were to find a thread that connects all of them it would be that it supports family, that it’s about kindness, compassion, it’s invitational,” says Downey. “We have a wide range of videos on everything from ‘do it yourself,’ or programs for little kids. We’re speaking to the millennial moms.” A video series Downey launched for Lightworkers.com, 37 Seconds of Good News, has already garnered 21 million views.

Lightworkers.com offers branding and sponsorship opportunities, including custom branded video, philanthropic initiatives and grassroots marketing. A partnership with Carnival and collaboration with Fathom, an initiative developed by Carnival dedicated to bringing deeper meaning to travel and to uniting people across oceans and borders, will offer inspirational content. That’s just the beginning - Downey notes that they’ve been communicating with a number of brands about sponsorships, advertising opportunities and potential collaborations. “We’re in early conversations with brands,” said Downey. “I mean, everybody’s excited about the potential and see the value. They know it’s going to be good for people, and they know it’s going to be good content because we have a great history of telling stories well.”

Crackle original drama series StartUp premieres Thursday, September 28 with all 10 episodes. SuperMansion: Drag Me to Halloween also bows on Sony’s streaming service on Thursday, October 5.

FuboTV inked a multi-year agreement with MSG Networks and will become the first live streaming OTT service to launch the company’s regional sports networks – MSG and MSG+. Timed to the new NBA and NHL seasons, fuboTV will make the networks available to subscribers of Fubo Premiere.
