ADVERTISING & BRANDS Many brands aren’t growing, and the problem comes from the top of the marketing chain, suggested Association of National Advertisers CEO Bob Liodice at the ANA’s Masters of Marketing conference in Orlando last week. “There has been substantial technological progress. But is that progress getting us anywhere?” asked Liodice. “The answer is a decided no.” The problem boils down to a lack of effective marketer leadership, said Liodice. “As leaders, we, as an industry, have refused to make the tough calls – calls that would take us out of the cesspool of suboptimum growth. For example, we as leaders should not accept this byzantine, non-transparent, super complex digital media supply chain.” To improve matters, the ANA’s CMO Masters Circle created a 12-point guide of actions to help foster growth in areas like brand and creative excellence, talent, transparency and brand safety. Speaking of, the ad tech industry is expanding, with employee headcount in the “brand safety” category in the lead, according to Pivotal Research Group analyst Brian Wieser. “Once again the fastest growing group of companies we have tracked are the companies with tools related to ad quality and brand safety, which in this grouping includes IAS and DoubleVerify,” says Wieser the report. Social media management providers like Hootsuite and location-based analytics firms were next in growth. Another speaker at the ANA gathering took a poke at a rival. Walmart CMO Tony Rogers said the retailer is now offering free 2-day shipping on purchases of $35 or more – no membership fee, like Amazon Prime’s, necessary. “We just don’t think you should have to pay $99 a year for that privilege,” said Rogers. CASTING Fortune Feimster reunites with The Mindy Project’s Mindy Kaling and exec producer Charlie Grandy as a cast member of upcoming NBC comedy Champions…Ella Purnell (Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children) landed the lead in upcoming Starz drama Sweetbitter….Jay Hayden (The Catch) has been cast in ABC’s upcoming Grey’s Anatomy firefighters spin-off….Javier Munoz (Hamilton) and Anna Hopkins (Arrow) will guest star on season 3 of Freeform’s Shadowhunters – and they won’t be playing nice….Alyla Marzoff (Grandfathered) and Sedale Threatt Jr. (Hap and Leonard) have been added to the cast of upcoming Freeform’s Siren in recurring roles. |
