The CW ordered three more episodes of All American, for a total of 16, after the drama opened season two with a series high 926,000 total viewers and a best-since-November rating of 0.3 among A18-49. The drama’s season one average was 670,000 viewers and 0.2 in the demo.
 
Group Nine Media announced that it has reached a definitive agreement to acquire Popsugar Inc., the digital lifestyle brand for women. “Popsugar hugely expands our reach within an important demographic, bringing us a community that deeply loves the Popsugar brand and a company with the proven ability to diversify their revenue across premium advertising, affiliate, direct-to-consumer commerce, licensing, and experiential channels,” said Ben Lerer, CEO of Group Nine.
 
Alex Trebek said he might have to leave his post as host of game show Jeopardy, as treatment for pancreatic cancer is affecting his speech. In an interview with Canada’s CTV, Trebek said, “The chemo has caused sores inside my mouth. It makes it difficult to speak and enunciate properly...I’m sure there are observant members of the television audience that notice also, but they’re forgiving. But there will come a point when they will no longer be able to say, ‘It’s okay.’...We’ll play it by ear and keep chugging along.”
 
The Jonas Brothers’ Nick Jonas will have a judge’s seat on NBC’s The Voice for the spring cycle. He’ll join current judges Kelly Clarkson, John Legend and Blake Shelton.
 
CBS is being sued by a former employee who claims she was discriminated against for being Mexican, and fired for complaining about it. In a lawsuit filed Monday, a former director of international treasury alleges she was given a raise to $227,000 after the Department of Labor notified CBS that her salary was significantly under the prevailing wage for the role, then lowered it when “the eyes of the DOL” were no longer on the situation.

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences launched a branding campaign and a new logo with a “simpler, more contemporary” approach. “The Emmy Awards are stronger than ever, with new distribution platforms driving record-breaking entry levels in each of our competitions,” said NATAS president and CEO Adam Sharp. “The new NATAS branding captures the long history of the iconic Emmy Award, now right at home in the digital age. It is a polished yet approachable design that evokes key themes of excellence, community, and transformation.”
 
The Bachelor star Peter Weber reportedly underwent emergency surgery after falling on a Costa Rican golf course. “He went to step on the cart but fell and split his face open on two cocktail glasses he was carrying,” a source told Radar Online. The accident apparently isn’t slowing Weber down, and he’s back in dating form.

CBS News and Quibi are teaming for a news show, 60 IN 6, that will deliver 60 Minutes’ brand of storytelling tailored for a new platform and a new audience. With the licensing agreement, the venerable newsmag will produce an original weekly program, approximately six minutes per episode, exclusively for Quibi. “This is a perfect opportunity to bring 60 Minutes’ style of storytelling, in-depth reporting and investigative journalism to a new audience,” said 60 Minutes executive producer Bill Owens. “We are excited to launch 60 IN 6, as our digital footprint is more important than ever.” The program will launch on Quibi next April.
 
Showtime ordered a pilot for drama series The President Is Missing, with David Oyelowo (Selma) in the title role. Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects), Anthony Peckham (Invictus), Heather McQuarrie and Oyelowo will executive produce the series; Peckham is writing the adaptation. 
 
Little Marvin (Them: Covenant) and his Odd Man Out signed an overall deal with Amazon Studios. Odd Man Out will create and produce original series and films to premiere exclusively on Prime Video.
 
Disney Channel has optioned the rights to the new novel by bestselling author Julie Murphy. “Dear Sweet Pea” is a follow-up to Murphy’s novel-turned-movie, “Dumplin’.”
 
Thinkfactory Media and WWE Studios announced a partnership to produce a new travel reality series, Big Show vs. The World: A Giant Abroad (wt), starring WWE Superstar Big Show. Each episode will feature Big Show venturing to a new exotic area, where he joins a local guide to dive into a native mystery or legend.
 
TV and film production house Shopify Studios has struck development partnerships with Abso Lutely Productions and production studio JASH to develop unscripted series for television and streaming platforms. Both projects will spotlight entrepreneurial endeavors through varying lenses and comedic approaches.
 
Melanie Leach, CEO Twofour and Andrew MacKenzie, CCO are in the concluding phase of talks that will see ITV Studios take a minority stake in their new company, South Shore. South Shore’s output will span documentary, popular factual and entertainment. 
 
GRB Studios and Zig Zag Productions inked a co-production agreement to align on the shopping and production of selected unscripted projects in the US and UK. Under the agreement, Zig Zag and GRB will jointly shop mutually-chosen Zig Zag projects in the United States and mutually-chosen GRB projects in the UK. Any shows greenlit will be coproduced by the companies. 
 
Search Party is moving from TBS to HBO Max. The dark comedy was renewed for two more seasons on TBS’s Turner sib, set to launch this Spring.
 
Disney Channel ordered a second season of Gabby Duran & the Unsittables, ahead of the series launch on Friday, October 11 at 9p.

Google added a new feature that makes it easier for people to control their media as they move from room to room. Stream transfer allows users to move music, videos, podcasts and more between compatible devices using their voice, the Google Home app or a Nest touchscreen.
 
Microsoft launched per-app and per-game time limits on its parental control software. Parents can also offer more screen time on certain days. “Ultimately, our goal is for the app and game limits feature to provide flexible and customizable tools to meet each family’s unique needs,” said the company.
 
STREAMING SNIPPETS
 
Netflix’s original series commanded more audience demand in 2Q19 than those of any other streaming platform in the world, according to Parrot Analytics’ latest Global TV Demand Report. But while Netflix led with 62.6% of global demand for digital original series, its global market share was down 3.1% from its first quarter result of 64.6%, and down 9% from its 2018 71% full-year result. The report also revealed continued demand for specific genres of content: Sci-fi dramas were the most in-demand in half of the markets analyzed, while Superhero, Crime Dramas and Comedy Dramas also showed increased demand, respectively, across all ten markets. In the Action/Adventure genre category, DC Universe originals beat out Netflix originals in demand share in the U.S., Canada, Brazil and Taiwan.
 
Consumer spending on video is projected by CTA to reach $17.7 billion in 2019, up 25% from last year. Smart TV sales are expected to rise 4%, to 29 million.
 
ADVERTISING
 
YouTube is looking to grab a bigger piece of the campaign advertising pie with its new Instant Reserve tool that gives political ad buyers an automated way to reserve slots through the end of February. When the tool launched Tuesday, “People acted quickly with what was available,” a Democratic staffer told the Wall Street Journal.
 
The E.W. Scripps Company also introduced a new tool for advertisers. The new platform, Scripps Octane, helps local advertisers target customers across a range of OTT video and streaming television providers; customers can build targeted OTT campaigns that can be highly customized across devices, day parts, geographies and consumer interests. “We know that about 204 million people in the U.S. will view OTT content this year, and those audiences are increasingly diverse in terms of their interests and consumption habits,” said Missy Evenson, VP of sales, Local Media, at Scripps. “Scripps Octane represents a path for our local advertisers to reach these audiences with built-in transparency and reporting tools to ensure their messages are resonating with the right audiences.” 
 
Programmatic video platform Tremor Video announced it has implemented self-service DSP advancements to its platform. The data-driven enhancements aim to allow media planners to execute and measure campaigns more effectively by providing them with an environment built for operational efficiency. In addition, Tremor Video has released new reporting enhancements to provide more actionable campaign planning and optimization, increased granularity of insights and improved ease of use.
 
Ad holding company IPG announced the formation of Kinesso, focused on creating applications that help marketers amplify the impact of traditional and addressable media through the better use of data by creating new software and products that deliver data trust and security tools, data-driven campaign optimization, and precision audiences. Kinesso will be comprised of Cadreon, IPG’s addressable media activation experts, and the company’s Data and Technology group. Kinesso will work in close partnership with IPG Mediabrands, Acxiom, and will provide services to agencies across the IPG network. “With the acquisition of Acxiom, we signaled our intent to lean into data-driven marketing, as well as position ourselves as brands’ trusted partner in their first party data management,” said Michael Roth, Chairman and CEO of Interpublic Group. “Kinesso furthers this vision by bringing together top data and technology talent with addressable media experts, and leveraging Acxiom’s assets and capabilities.”
 
SpotX announced  an expanded partnership with AMC to power programmatic monetization for OTT video throughout the Halloween season. “Last year, AMC viewership grew across digital by nearly 80% in video views and nearly 10% in reach, so this is an exciting opportunity for advertisers to reach consumers that they otherwise may not be reaching,” said David Pudjunis, director, yield management at AMC Networks.
 
TVSquared and Extreme Reach announced a partnership aimed at allowing advertisers to measure all impressions across every ad-supported streaming service. With the integration, TVSquared Advantage looks at 100% of the linear and digital TV landscape.

Amazon Prime Video announced its first unscripted Italian Amazon Original series, Celebrity Hunted – Caccia all’uomo, where celebrities go on the run, with limited resources, from a team of expert hunters.
 
The BAFTA TV Awards rules have changed to include eligibility for series that did not premiere in the UK, though series must still be initiated and developed there. The issue came up last year after BAFTA had to make an exception to include BBC America drama Killing Eve among the nominees.  
 
Viacom International Media Networks struck an agreement with Amazon Prime Video to add two new SVOD services to the Prime Video Channels lineup in Mexico: Paramount+ and Noggin, Nick Jr.’s learning service.  
 
In more Viacom news, Viacom International Studios heads to MIPCOM with new VOD content sales deals for Awesomeness. Among the shows: The BBC has picked up seasons one and two of Zac and Mia; free-to-air service, 4Music has licensed the first three seasons of teen drama Guidance and romance series Confess; and RTL’s SVOD service Videoland has licensed Light as a Feather, Guidance, Freakish and My Dead Ex. 
 
The Royal Television Society has launched the RTS Television Journalism Awards 2020, recognizing creative and excellent journalism by organizations whose broadcasts are transmitted on a UK based platform or who create online video content from a UK production base. 
 
Alleycats struck its first distribution deal with global independent studio Entertainment One for Lost Worlds and Hidden Treasures, originally produced for BBC Four under the title Raiders of The Lost Past with Janina Ramirez. Three-part series focuses on the summer of 1939, on the eve of the Second World War, when three archaeological treasures were discovered that would transform our understanding of the origins of civilization.

The season ten premiere of AMC’s The Walking Dead drew 4 million total viewers and 1.9 million among A18-49, down 34% and 42%, respectively, versus its season nine debut but still cable’s top show. The episode was also available for a week before its linear launch on streaming service AMC Premiere.
 
Hallmark Channe’s Over the Moon in Love, kicking off the net’s “Fall Harvest” programming event, ranked as the highest-rated and most-watched program of the day excluding news and sports, propelling the network to be the highest-rated and most-watched cable network during the weekend. The premiere averaged a 2.1 HH rating, 2 million total viewers, and 305,000 W25-54.
 
In a syndication week hit hard by impeachment-related preemptions, The Kelly Clarkson Show (1.2, down 14%) remained the No. 1 new show overall the week of September 23. Tamron Hall held steady at 0.9, while talk rival Mel Robbins  was down 25%, to 0.3. In courtroom newcomer action, Judge Jerry (1.0, steady) out-rated the other two frosh court shows: Personal Injury Court (0.5, up 25%) and Protection Court (0.3, unchanged). 
 
For the fifth consecutive week, Univision delivered week-over-week primetime audience growth with the A18-49 demographic (+2% to 563,000) the week of September 30. Monday through Friday, Univision increased it primetime audience from the prior week among A18-49 (+5% to 600,000) and total viewers (+3% to 1.4 million).
 
UniMás saw double-digit week-over-week audience growth during primetime among total viewers (+24% to 352,000), A18-49 (+36% to 177,000) and A18-34 (+41% to 76,000), marking the second consecutive week of audience growth.
 
UPtv continues to see ratings growth since launching Reba and the return of original series Bringing Up Bates. 3Q19 prime is up +12% in W25-54 and +7% in HH’s versus year-ago and prime in September is up +16% versus year-ago in W25-54 and up +12% in HHs.

EXECUTIVE MOVES
 
October Films announced that Executive Chairman Denman Rooke is stepping down after almost 25 years at the company. In 2014, Rooke was appointed Executive Chairman; his strategic responsibilities will be taken on by Managing Director Adam Bullmore; Director, Production and Operations, Jane Manning; and Creative Director Matt Robins.
 
Also stepping down is Michael Bloom, who leaves his position as SVP of unscripted and specials for TBS and TNT for a producing deal with WarnerMedia and his just-launched Bongo Pictures.
