Late-night king Stephen Colbert is staying put at CBS well past the 2020 election. On Thursday, the network announced that it had agreed to a contract extension with Colbert that will keep him as host of The Late Show through August 2023. He was previously signed through August 2020. Kurt Sutter was fired from his Sons of Anarchy spinoff, Mayans M.C. In an email to cast and crew, Sutter explained, “As you know, I’ve removed myself quite a bit this season, allowing others to take a bigger role in producing the show. It appears that philosophy has backfired. It’s been reported by writers, producers, cast and crew that my absence and subsequent behavior when there, has only created confusion, chaos, hostility and is perceived as abandonment. Or at least that’s how Disney has interpreted it. I’m sure it’s true. This morning I was fired by Dana Walden and John Landgraf for all the complaints levied against me. Not the way I wanted to end my 18 year relationship with FX. At least being fired for being an abrasive d**k is on brand.” It appears Sutter will continue with his overall deal at 20th Century FoxTV, now part of Disney TV Studios, where has been for the last 15 years. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg shared his views on freedom of expression in a speech at Georgetown University on Thursday, explaining that Facebook and its peers have emerged as a “fifth estate” of digital speech in society, alongside the news media. “People having the power to express themselves at scale is a new kind of force in the world,” said Zuckerberg. “It is a fifth estate alongside the other power structures in our society.” Helen Hunt, star of Spectrum Originals reboot Mad About You, is reportedly at home resting following a serious car accident. Production on the revival of the 1990s NBC comedy, which also stars Paul Reiser, continued pre-shooting as scheduled on Thursday. It was unclear if Hunt would be able to return to work on Friday. However, it will not impact the release of the series - the first six episodes are completed and are set to debut on Wednesday, November 20. History celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2020 with a HISTORYTalks event featuring former US presidents. The first in a series of day-long events will be an exclusive session with President Bill Clinton and President George W. Bush in conversation with presidential historian Doris Kearns Goodwin on Saturday, February 29 at Carnegie Hall in New York. AT&T and Sinclair Broadcast Group reached a multi-year carriage deal that will keep the 21 regional sports networks once owned by Fox on DirecTV and other platforms. The agreement also covers Sinclair’s owned local broadcast stations and the Tennis Channel. One yet-to-launch RSN that factored into negotiations was the Marquee Sports Network, a venture with the Chicago Cubs, set to bow in 2020. Investigation Discovery announced the arrest of Martin Jose Jarquin-Estrada, a fugitive wanted for murder, thanks to pressure after the airing of In Pursuit with John Walsh. US marshals extradited Jarquin-Estrada to the United States to face charges for the 2017 murder of Elkin Corrales. Season two of the series premieres Wednesday, January 15 at 10p on ID. | PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT Food Network teamed with Guy Fieri on new bracket style culinary competition, Tournament of Champions. Five-episode series will feature 16 chefs going head-to-head as Fieri puts their cooking skills to the test via different challenges. Aidan Turner (The Hobbit, Poldark) is set to headline Leonardo (wt), an eight-episode drama series celebrating the life and work of artist Leonardo da Vinci. Showrunner Frank Spotnitz (The X-Files) and British writer Steve Thompson (Sherlock) are behind the series, while Daniel Percival is directing. Lux Vide and Spotnitz’s Big Light Productions will produce. A series based on the 1995 feature, Clueless, is in the works at CBS TV Studios, according to Deadline. A new dramatic take on the high-school comedy will center around the Dionne character, and has drawn interest from numerous streamers as well as The CW. Written by Jordan Reddout and Gus Hickey (Will &Grace), the new Clueless is said to be a Mean Girls meets Riverdale meets a Lizzo music video. Apple signed writer-producer Monica Beletsky (Fargo, The Leftovers, Parenthood) to a multi-year overall agreement, to develop, write and produce TV series exclusively for Apple TV+, reports Deadline. The pact reunited Beletsky with Jason Katims and Kerry Ehrin, who also overall pacts at Apple, both whom she worked with on Friday Night Lights and Parenthood. Showtime Documentary Films is moving forward with a limited docu-series profiling notorious hip-hop artist Tekashi 6ix9ine. Titled SuperVillain, the project was inspired by the Rolling Stone feature “Tekashi 6ix9ine: The Rise and Fall of a Hip Hop Supervillain” by investigative journalist Stephen Witt. It will trace how a New York City deli clerk named Daniel Hernandez emerged into hip hop’s prince of trolls. Julia Garner’s (Ozark) relationship with MRC Television, the studio behind the Netflix series, is expanding. She just signed first-look deal to develop and executive produce TV projects for the company. NEW & RETURNING SERIES Smithsonian Channel’s America In Color returns Sunday, November 17 at 8p. The show’s third season premiere will be available to stream on the network’s YouTube page beginning Sunday, November 17. In addition, new series, Britain in Color bows Sunday, November 17 at 9p. The debut episode features the earliest existing footage of Queen Victoria. Nature – Okavango: River of Dreams bows Wednesday, October 23 at 8p on PBS. Three-part series from Dereck and Beverly Joubert and narrated by F. Murray Abraham explores the wildlife of this African oasis. HBO set a premiere date for The Outsider. The drama series, based on Stephen King’s bestselling novel, debuts with back-to-back episodes on Sunday, January 12 at 9p and 10p. COMING UP Antenna TV is serving up a Dennis the Menace marathon over Thanksgiving weekend. The net is broadcasting all 146 episodes of the classic series beginning Wednesday, November 27 at 8p. Members of the Broadway company of The SpongeBob Musical: Live On Stage! will film a television special in front of a live theater audience. The project is slated to air in December on Nickelodeon. The ninth annual American Humane Hero Dog Awards premieres on Hallmark Channel on Monday, October 21 at 8p. PODCAST POSTS Thrillist premiered its inaugural podcast, Thrillist’s Best (and the Rest), yesterday. Its first season features 20 episodes that tackle one big question every Thursday, from the best new restaurants in America to which Pixar movie made Thrillist editors cry the most. Wondery has joined forces with NBC News to jointly produce new original narrative podcasts. New content will be created across news and politics, criminal justice, and lifestyle verticals. WWE’s first ever weekly podcast series, After the Bell, debuts Saturday, October 30. Hosted by WWE commentator Corey Graves, it gives fans a provocative look at the latest in Raw, SmackDown and NXT. NBC 4 New York/WNBC launched Question Authority, the first major podcast focusing on the challenges surrounding New York City’s Housing Authority. Hosted by Chris Glorioso, the six-episode podcast examines the troubled agency as told through the words of NYCHA residents. STREAMING E! and Rotten Tomatoes have joined Quibi’s Daily Essentials programming. Rotten Tomatoes bows Fresh Daily, a deep dive into TV, streaming and film. E! will debut an untitled daily celebrity news show using the brand’s blend of information access and voice; the show will deliver the best of celebrity and pop culture news expected from E! News, but made exclusively for Quibi. Bleacher Report teamed with Kids at Play Creative Studio to produce Battlestations, a docu-series spotlighting the gaming lives of professional athletes. Hosted by Doug “Censor” Martin, a four-time Call of Duty champion, the pilot features New Orleans Pelicans’ Josh Hart and Sacramento Kings De’ Aaron Fox, getting the lowdown on how they decompress from their intense pro-sports careers by playing video games in their spectacular in-home setups. Whistle announced the launch of WhistleTV, its first linear OTT channel, at NAB Show New York on Thursday. The channel will offer a variety of ad-supported content 24-hours a day, ranging from original programming, episodic content featuring social media influencers, niche sports league programming, inspirational movies and documentaries. TECH TALK Snapchat is targeting direct-response advertising spending from retailers and direct-to-consumer brands with its new dynamic ads. The ads, which have been in beta testing for over a year, allow marketers to create ads on the fly. Since they connect directly to product catalogs, the ads are up-to-date, and can be automatically created and targeted based on a Snapchat user’s past behavior. China’s TikTok launched an education program in India on Thursday, as the short-video app looks to expand its offering. It marks the first time TikTok has launched a program of this type in market. The company is working with a number of content creators and firms in India to populate the platform with educational videos. GOING GLOBAL Anna (wt), a new series created and directed by Niccolo Ammaniti, was commissioned by SKY. It centers on a brave young girl who sets off on a search for her kidnapped brother. Project begins shooting in this month. Quantum Inc. joined the Global Startup Studio Network. It marks the community’s first Asian-based studio Clio and Brand Storytelling launched a new program to celebrate branded entertainment that raises awareness for a cause. The inaugural Storytelling for Good Award will be presented during the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. The program is open for entries at cliobrandstorytelling.com until December 6. |
