IN THE NEWS

AMC renewed Preacher for season four. The drama, from Seth Rogan and Evan Goldberg, begins production in Australia in early 2019. Preacher is a show unlike any other on television,” said David Madden, President, Programming, Entertainment Networks, AMC Networks. “A passionate base of fans found their way to Jesse, Tulip and Cassidy and have followed along with their adventures, at times indescribable adventures.”

Not making it to season four is Netflix’s Daredevil, canceled after three seasons. “Although it’s painful for the fans, we feel it best to close this chapter on a high note,” said the streamer. Disney-owned Marvel assured disappointed fans they haven’t seen the last Daredevil, saying, “We look forward to more adventures with the Man Without Fear in the Future.” It’s a trend - Netflix axed Marvel’s Iron Fist and Luke Cage in October.

Three months after Tribune Media's $3.9 billion deal to sell itself to Sinclair Broadcast Group fell apart, Nexstar Media Group has reached an agreement to acquire Tribune for $4.1 billion, according to Reuters. Nextstar's all-cash bid reportedly beat one from private equity firm Apollo Global Management. If the deal goes through, it would make Nexstar the number one local TV station owner in the US.

NBC picked up two more episodes each from Wednesday night block shows Chicago Fire, Chicago PD and Chicago Med, bringing season orders for all three to 22 episodes.

In a lengthy Facebook post, astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson addressed three allegations of sexual misconduct. “These accusations have received a fair amount of press in the past forty-eight hours, unaccompanied by my reactions,” he wrote. “In many cases, it’s not the media’s fault. I declined comment on the grounds that serious accusations should not be adjudicated in the press. But clearly I cannot continue to stay silent.” After recounting his side of the stories, the Cosmos and StarTalk host said he welcomes the investigation Nat Geo and Fox announced on Friday.

A blackout on Dish Network was brief for Tegna stations on Saturday. The companies reached a multi-year carriage deal within hours, restoring station signals.

ADVERTISING & BRANDS

Ninety percent of A25-34 stream video, up 18% from 2016, according to the Video Advertising Bureau report “Linear TV and OTT: Living Together in Harmony.” TV’s the place to be: Viewers spend an average of two times longer engaging with ads on connected TV versus similar ads online, and the video completion rate for CTV is 25% higher than it is for desktop and mobile.

October’s national ad market was up 7% year over year, according to Standard Media Index. Digital media, up 17%, was the biggest driver. Cable networks rose 5%, while broadcast dipped 5% due in large part to fewer NFL games (27, down from 31).

Brands that are perceived as innovative and that also provide a great experience grew the most in value in the second annual “BrandZ Top 100 Most Valuable U.S. Brands” ranking, from WPP and Kantar Millward Brown. As Americans engage with brands in more and more places, according to the study, the brands that continually innovate customer experience are growing 200% more than those that don’t. Apple topped the charts, increasing its brand value by 13% in the last year, to $316.1 billion, by continuing its innovation across an ecosystem of services. Netflix grew its brand value the most over the past year, up 93% to $30.2 billion, based on personalizing its service. Uber, #35 on the list, provides the best brand experience, according to U.S. consumers.

“Innovative companies such as Netflix and Uber are disrupting markets and creating new ones, while larger brands like Apple continue to shake things up with data, digital and marketing technology investments to maintain leadership in the new era of consumer experience,” said Tim Wragg, CEO Kantar North America Insights Division. This year’s ranking shows that while U.S. brands are amongst the most innovative in the world, innovation alone is no longer enough for brands to grow.”
