ADVERTISING & BRANDS

New and existing streaming video services will account for multiple billions of dollars in domestic advertising spending by the time they are all operating at scale, according to ad agency GroupM’s latest US forecast. Total spending on advertising in the US is expected to rise 6.2 percent in 2019. Digital advertising will propel larger growth than initially projected for the overall ad market for the remainder of 2019 and 2020, the report notes, with digital ads representing a 50 percent share of advertising with 20 percent growth for 2019 and 15 percent growth for 2020. Digital companies including Alphabet, Amazon, Booking.com, eBay, Facebook, IAC, Netflix and Uber are significantly contributing to the overall double-digit growth for advertising and are likely to spend more than $30 billion on advertising this year, GroupM estimates. Among other report highlights:
  • TV advertising will end 2019 with a 2 percent decline, ex-political. National TV advertising will be closer to zero, or even up very slightly, while local is down by low single digits.
  • Outdoor should be the fastest-growing “traditional” medium, up by 8 percent.
