Good morning. It’s Tuesday September 26, 2017 and this is your your first early morning Digital briefing!

TODAY’S CODEBREAKER

Unstructured Data: Unstructured data is a term for disorganized pools of data that appear to be unconnected and random. Digital marketers often use machine learning to make sense of that data, identifying patterns that can be useful when making marketing decisions. Marketers often gather unstructured data even when it doesn’t appear relevant, knowing that some of it may indeed prove relevant on closer examination.

JUST IN…

Facebook’s Instagram likes to trumpet its user stats on a regular basis, and it’s easy to see why. The company’s latest announcement, which came at Advertising Week in New York City, revealed that Instagram now boasts 800 million monthly active users. That’s an increase of 100 million monthly active users over the past five months. In addition, Instagram announced that 500 million of those users are on the platform daily. Things look just as rosy if you take a deeper look: Internal data shows that video-viewing increased 80 percent year-over-year, and that the number of videos uploaded to Instagram daily quadrupled over the past year. In addition, the app now has more than 2 million advertisers, according to a new blog post from the company. None of this is good news for rival Snapchat, whose user growth has been slower than expected since its March IPO.

Something fascinating is happening on Wall Street: Netflix is taking a beating. The streaming giant’s stock fell by 4.86% on Monday, hitting $178.22. The fall came directly on the heels of an announcement from FX Networks: The company revealed that it would start selling FX+ - an ad-free on-demand service - through its cable partners. As Business Insider notes, FX’s move is part of a broader trend in which content producers have decided to create their own services instead of relying on SVOD platforms like Netflix. (CBS and Disney are just a couple of examples.) It’s easy to see why Netflix has spent billions of dollars on original content: That’s what’s likeliest to keep it vital in the long term.

In a big blow to Microsoft, Apple confirmed that Google is now the default search engine for Siri on iOS and for Spotlight on Macs. Microsoft’s Bing had previously been the default.

ADVERTISING

At Advertising Week in New York, IBM exec Jordan Bitterman announced that The Weather Company’s ad business will now become IBM Watson Advertising. IBM acquired The Weather Company in early 2016, and has since brought many IBM tech solutions – including its Watson supercomputer – to the The Weather Company’s ad platform. The newly-formulated division fully combines The Weather Company’s ad tech properties with IBM’s other tech solutions. IBM Watson Advertising will feature a suite of AI products for initiatives such as media planning, audience targeting, content creation, and data analysis.

OTT + SVOD

This is what happens when you’ve already saturated the terrestrial market. Starting next year, Netflix will try to take to the skies, extending its encoding technology to airline carriers around the world. Netflix says the technology – designed for mobile devices – will let airline carriers save up to 75% in bandwidth costs. The goal, of course, is to encourage airline partners to let passengers stream high-quality in-flight Netflix content. The company announced the new initiative at the 2017 APEX Expo, an annual event focused on airline passenger experience.

CYNOPSIS WEBINAR: THE EVOLVING HISPANIC DEMO

TV consumption among U.S. Hispanics is undergoing a major shift – both in terms of what’s being watched, and where. Crafting programming that gains a foothold with this growing and influential group, which represents 18% of the country’s population, is crucial. Register for Cynopsis’s new webinar, and start harnessing the power of the evolving Hispanic demo.

PROGRAMMING

Amazon locked up the global rights to 4 Blocks, a drama series about German gangsters. The six-part show debuted at the Berlin Film Festival. It’ll be available on Amazon Prime Video starting October 4. The show will initially roll out in 150 countries, including the U.S. and Canada.

APPS + PLATFORMS

Barcroft Media, a factual content production and distribution company based in the U.K., has launched a new TV app. The app, which is free and ad-supported, will feature content from the Barcroft TV, Barccroft Cars, and Barcroft Animals YouTube channels. New shows will debut on the app a day ahead of their premieres on YouTube. The Barcroft app will be available across numerous devices and platforms, including Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Roku devices, iOS and Android mobile devices, and others.

YouTube is spotlighting its Latino creators. To coincide with Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15-October 15), the video giant will feature a number of playlists on its YouTube Spotlight that highlight the work of creators like Lele Pons, Bethany Mota, and Eric Ochoa. YouTube says the playlists will be refreshed every nine days during Hispanic Heritage Month.

LET’S MAKE A DEAL

Mashable may be up for sale. According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, the digital media company has been in “extensive” talks with German mass media company ProSiebenSat.1. This wouldn’t be new territory from ProSieben – the company also owns the digital media network Studio71. The Journal reports that Mashable, which remains unprofitable, had initially been hoping to raise more funding from a strategic investor, but is “now leaning toward an all-out sale.” Viacom reportedly “explored” a deal with the company, but ultimately decided not to move forward. And Turner, which led a $15 million funding round in Mashable last year, reportedly wasn’t interested in taking full control of the company.
