Google has rolled out the open-source version of the differential privacy library that helps power some of its core products, announced the company in a blog post. “To make the library easy for developers to use, we’re focusing on features that can be particularly difficult to execute from scratch, like automatically calculating bounds on user contributions. It is now freely available to any organization or developer that wants to use it,” posted Miguel Guevara, Product Manager, Privacy and Data Protection Office. Differentially-private data analysis enables organizations to learn from the majority of their data while ensuring that results do not allow any individual's data to be distinguished or re-identified.

A new setting in Google’s Gmail app makes it easier for IOS users to stop email tracking, “by disabling an email sender’s ability to precisely locate a recipient via an IP address,” reports The Verge. The setting prevents Gmail from automatically loading attached images and email trackers within messages.

A cyber attack forced Wikipedia offline in countries in Europe and parts of the Middle East on Friday. “The attack is ongoing and our Site Reliability Engineering team is working hard to stop it and restore access to the site,” said the company. “As one of the world’s most popular sites, Wikipedia sometimes attracts ‘bad faith’ actors. Along with the rest of the web, we operate in an increasingly sophisticated and complex environment where threats are continuously evolving.”

Apple launched a public beta of its music streaming service on the web. The service includes features like searching and playing songs from the Apple Music catalogue and accessing playlists, with the main sections from the Apple Music app available. Subscribers can sign in with their Apple ID, and will be asked for feedback to help improve the service.

Kantar is partnering with Pulse Labs to get a better handle on consumer usage of voice assistants, offering greater insight into both the “what” and “why” of consumer smart speaker usage and smart home evolution. The initiative aims to improve conversational AI functionality, such as enhancing the utility of voice skills and apps, while making it possible for brands to see where they should play on the new platforms.

Comcast and LG Electronics USA announced the launch of the Xfinity Stream beta app for 2019, 2018, and 2017 LG Smart TVs. Xfinity Stream gives customers the ability to access the live, on demand, and cloud DVR programming included with their Xfinity TV subscription on LG 4K Ultra HD Smart TVs and HD Smart TVs, without a traditional set-top box.

Amazon announced a lineup of more than 15 new Fire TV Edition products, including the first Fire TV Edition smart TV with built-in far-field voice control, the first OLED Fire TV Edition smart TV, and the first Fire TV Edition soundbar. “Customers have told us how much they use and love Fire TV Edition smart TVs in the United States and Canada, with millions of devices sold and an average rating of more than 4 stars across all models,” said Marc Whitten, Vice President of Amazon Fire TV. “We can’t wait for customers to experience these new devices with the Fire TV experience built-in.” And not just customers in the U.S. - the company also announced collaborations with Dixons Carphone, MediaMarktSaturn, and Grundig to bring the next generation of Fire TV Edition smart TVs to customers in the United KingdomGermany, and Austria.

Crowd-sourced writing solutions company Write Label unveiled a proprietary software platform that manages TV script projects, and is customized to interface with enterprise customers. Recently, the platform worked with 12 local U.S. TV station groups for a pilot program that included only revenue from new or lost opportunities, or past clients that had not renewed within the last year, and resulted in a total of over $800,000 in closed new revenue and more than $4.5 million of pipeline expansion from across 687 projects on the Write Label platform.

YouTube’s crackdown on hateful content resulted in a spike of videos and channels purged during the second quarter of 2019. In a blog post on Tuesday, the Google-owned video giant said the policy change led to a fivefold increase in the number of videos (111,185) and channels (17,818) removed in Q2 for hate-speech violations compared with previous typical quarters. It also noted that total comments removed in the quarter nearly doubled, to about 538 million, in part as a result of the updated policy. The platform announced an update to its hate-speech policy in June that banned content “alleging that a group is superior in order to justify discrimination, segregation or exclusion based on qualities like age, gender, race, caste, religion, sexual orientation or veteran status.”

Oracle is adding advanced video capabilities across all of its Oracle Cloud products. A partnership with cloud video provider Kaltura will give Oracle’s customers access to a suite of native video tools (like interactive video creation and editing, cross-platform video playback and video analytics) without having to leave the platform. This will be powered through an OEM partnership with Kaltura’s Video Platform as a Service. As part of the partnership, Kaltura’s video APIs will become available within the Oracle Content and Experience Cloud Platform.

FACEBOOK

Facebook has been hit with antitrust investigations in New York, Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee and the District of Columbia. "I am proud to be leading a bipartisan coalition of attorneys general in investigating whether Facebook has stifled competition and put users at risk," said New York Attorney General Letitia James. “We will use every investigative tool at our disposal to determine whether Facebook's actions may have endangered consumer data, reduced the quality of consumers' choices, or increased the price of advertising.” A separate investigation of Google’s practices by states led by Texas is expected to be announced today.

In more friendly Facebook news, the social media giant launched its Dating service in the U.S. last week, allowing users to integrate Instagram posts, and by year’s end Facebook and Instagram Stories, into their Dating profiles. A “Secret Crush” feature also allows users to share a list of Facebook and Instagram followers they have their eye on, and if both users have chosen each other, they’ll be notified they’re a match

Facebook unveiled new tools and updates for Messenger. While still in testing phase, one feature affords real-time appointment booking through Messenger that allows businesses to integrate their existing calendar booking software to power booking. Also, a new lead generation template is designed to make it easier for businesses to create automated experience to help qualify leads within Messenger. From there, they can continue conversation with potential customers in Messenger and integrate with existing CRM tools to track leads. In addition to these new tools, Facebook is also updating some of Messenger’s platform policies with a goal toward encouraging more personalized and relevant conversations between businesses and consumers.

ADVERTISING

Programmatic video platform Tremor Video has expanded its demand-side platform’s AI and machine-learning technology. “No two campaigns are alike, and each deserves its own neural network to act on its behalf in real-time, consistently ensuring the best price per performance, and providing advertisers with the most effective platform in the market,” said Tal Mor, CTO at Tremor Video. “Our team of engineers and data scientists have worked vigorously to create a self-learning system that personalizes campaign buying behavior in order to pinpoint the most suitable audience out of billions of potential impressions.” The DSP evaluates high-value opportunities for brands and agencies with the goal of improving their cross-platform video and connected TV campaign performance.

Xandr, AT&T’s advanced advertising and analytics company, has launched Xandr Monetize, a strategic selling platform built on the foundation of AppNexus technology.
Xandr Monetize gives publishers and media owners the control to navigate the consumer journey and client relationships, to offer content owners improved monetization through better inventory management capabilities, data-driven yield optimization, and differentiated buyer demand. “With the size, scale, and resources of AT&T, we are uniquely positioned to offer the scaled, streamlined selling platform the industry needs,” said Ryan Christensen, SVP of Product, Xandr.

According to a recent study from the ARF, consumers are slightly less likely to share their data in 2019 compared to last year. The study’s sample, which was balanced by age, demo and region, also measured trust and how it varied by demo group and forms of privacy on digital, mobile vs. PC usage, and trust in institutions.
This shift in consumer attitude is a harbinger of to come as the American market faces legal restrictions not only globally from the GDPR but also nationally from the California Consumer Protection Act (CCPA), which as Paul Donato, Chief Research Officer at the ARF explains, is soon going into effect, allowing, “consumers to opt-out of the sale of their personal information to third parties, not to mention the other upcoming state and federal regulations that could impact the ad tech industry.” For more on the study, go to Cynsiders.

Tablets are the best-performing device when it comes to back-to-school campaigns, according to new data from people-based marketing platform LiveIntent. The study found that tablets had a 50% higher CTR compared to PCs and phones, and that afternoons are best, with the most clicks and conversions occurring between 12pm and 6pm. As for days of the week, Fridays and Sundays are the best days for clicks and conversions while mid-week and mid-weekend are the worst days. Wednesdays and Saturdays proved to be the worst days for these campaigns, coming in last in the amount of clicks and conversions.

The IAB Tech Lab has come up with a solution for standardizing data collection and improving privacy settings. The “standardized identifier” would be set up as a public utility, and improve the way advertisers identify audiences without giving away information about individuals. Companies that want to access the standardized identifier would have to agree to conditions like “consistently demonstrate compliance to the privacy preferences.”

Amazon has expanded availability for its Amazon Attribution tool, which allows brands to track whether clicking on Facebook and Google ads led to an Amazon purchase. “Sales attribution and return on investment (ROI) measurement no longer have to come in the form of a post-campaign report. Amazon Attribution enables on-demand access to conversion reporting,” said the company in a blog post. “Brands can sign in to the console and pull reporting at their convenience or schedule reporting at their preferred cadence. The sooner marketers can access attribution metrics for live campaigns, the faster they’re able to optimize those campaigns to help maximize ROI and limit wasteful impressions.”
