The free Roku app is now available on Apple Watch. To access the functionality, users can update the Roku mobile app to version 6.13 via their iPhone, and the app will appear on Apple Watch. And not only can Roku devices can be controlled directly from the watch - but the watch can be used to find lost remotes.
 
Centro announced the expansion of artificial intelligence decisioning on its Basis platform to optimize campaigns towards viewability, cost-per-acquisition, or video completions. Centro also released bid multipliers within Basis, to automate higher bidding for impressions with specific targeting attributes. “ In the same way that GPS navigation analyzes numerous data points to find the best routes, Basis finds the most optimal way for advertisers to engage customers on any digital channel,” said Tyler Kelly, President, Centro. “By advancing the artificial intelligence and machine learning capabilities on Basis, Centro is giving advertisers a full tech stack for end-to-end business automation.”
 
Comcast Spotlight, the ad sales division of Comcast Cable, has rebranded as Effectv . The name change follows an evolution of the company over the past year, including the rollout of new data-driven TV advertising strategies, targeting and attribution products, cross-screen capabilities and a self-service buying platform for advertisers. “Our new name, Effectv, reflects our commitment to drive better performance for our advertising clients,” said Marcien Jenckes, President, Comcast Advertising. “By applying data to television advertising in new ways, across all screens, and making it easier to buy than ever before, we’re transforming TV advertising. We combine the targeting and measurement of digital, with the reach and impact of television.”
 
Tumblr launched group chats, a new mobile  product aimed at helping people on Tumblr connect with their communities in real-time. The chats, available in the Tumblr Dashboard, are public spaces where users can explore interests in topics from art to entertainment to social issues and identity
 
The FCC gave formal approval for the T-Mobile/Sprint merger . “After a lengthy and painstaking review process, the Commission has correctly concluded that this transaction is in the public interest,” FCC chairman Ajit Pai said. “In particular, the transaction will help secure United States leadership in 5G, close the digital divide in rural America, and enhance competition in the broadband market.”

Jellyfish continues its global expansion  following investment from French group Fimalac.The deal will see data-driven specialist Tradelab (part of Fimalac Group), a leading programmatic buyer in Europe and a web analytics and optimization expert, integrated into Jellyfish. Comprised of 300 global experts, Tradelab has 120 specialists dedicated to technology, innovation and development alone, and is a Google Marketing Partner.
 
Facebook is updating its company branding , introducing a new company logo to distinguish between the company and its app. “People should know which companies make the products they use. Our main services include the Facebook app, Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp, Oculus, Workplace, Portal and Calibra. These apps and technologies have shared infrastructure for years and the teams behind them frequently work together,” said Antonio Lucio, CMO, in a blog post. “We started being clearer about the products and services that are part of Facebook years ago, adding a company endorsement to products like Oculus, Workplace and Portal. And in June we began including ‘from Facebook’ within all our apps.” Over the coming weeks, the company will start using the new brand within its products and marketing materials, including a new company website.
 
Facebook also said it was removing mentions that purport to name the whistleblower who filed a complaint over President Trump’s phone call with the president of Ukraine. “Any mention of the potential whistleblower’s name violates our coordinating harm policy, which prohibits content ‘outing of witness, informant, or activist,’ ” said a Facebook spokesperson on Friday. “We are removing any and all mentions of the potential whistleblower’s name and will revisit this decision should their name be widely published in the media or used by public figures in debate.”

New research from video platform Imagen suggests a generational shift is happening  among sports fans across the major US pro leagues, with Millennial and Gen Z fans showing a desire to interact with sports content beyond live games, and a strong preference for more personalized engagement with content.  Four times as many Millennial and Gen Z fans watch over three hours of non-game sports content each week compared to Baby Boomers, 78% of fans enhance their live experience with non-game content by dual screening while watching a live game and 39% of Millennials are willing to pay for exclusive online sports content. What’s the takeaway for the TV industry? “The study we conducted surfaced a number of interesting insights for content owners and rights-holders across the sports media landscape,” Ryan Rolf, Imagen CRO, , tells Cynopsis. “Game broadcasters should do more to embrace second screening through official companion apps and social streams or otherwise risk fans consuming content in-game via competing platforms. While influencer content and traditional TV formats should not be thought of as isolated entities, instead influencers should be embraced for their authenticity by implementing them into programming that breaks down the traditional wall between teams, and their fans. Then when it comes to sporting archives, our research suggests rights holders would benefit by giving direct access to fans and embracing the short-form formats so popular on YouTube.”
 
Time spent streaming was up 53% year over year, according to Conviva’s third quarter State of Streaming report.  Sixty-three percent of streaming was on demand. “Streaming is quickly becoming the new normal. As a result, we will continue to see new upstarts in the category accompanied by traditional media companies and big brand advertisers embracing the potential of the market,” said Conviva CEO Bill Demas. “This is an industry undergoing massive growth, and what happens in the next 18 months will shape what, how and when we watch content in the future.”
 
Sabio announced the launch of advanced TV solution App Science TV The App Science platform was developed to analyze the app ecosystem, locations, and other consumer behaviors to gain deeper insights about an individual’s interests, affinities, and life stage. Aziz Rahim, CEO of Sabio, says the industry is ready for Sabio’s new two-pronged approach: “After spending years in TV advertising along with an equal amount of time in mobile, the time is right for the two worlds to converge in order to bring a greater level of insights across both platforms.”
 
Shipments of smartphones in 3Q19 grew 2%,  to 366 million units, reports Strategy Analytics, reversing a slow-down trend. “Worldwide demand for smartphones is recovering, due to strong pricing competition among vendors and new innovations such as larger screens and 5G connectivity,” stated Linda Sui, director at Strategy Analytics.
 
Microsoft announced details for the rollout of its Chromium-based Edge browser  and a tool to read your email aloud in the Outlook app, among other plans, at its Ignite conference on Monday. A final version of the Edge browser is expected on January 15; new PCs will be pre-loaded with the new Edge.
 
Meredith sold its 60% ownership of Viant Technology Holding  to Viant Technology LLC. Viant is one of several non-core assets Meredith got when it bought Time Inc. in January 2018.
