Good morning. It’s Monday June 11, 2018 and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

Justify’s historic Triple Crown victory in Saturday’s Belmont Stakes on NBC delivered an 8.1/19 overnight (not including digital) – likely making it the weekend’s top TV event. NBC’s overnight for the 150th Belmont Stakes peaked at a 9.9/23 from 6:45-7 p.m. ET, according to the networks, as Justify crossed the finish line to become the second undefeated Triple Crown winner (Seattle Slew) in U.S. horse racing history.

Top markets for NBC’s Belmont Stakes telecast:
1 - Louisville 19.0/36
2 – Ft. Myers 15.2/30
3 - Baltimore 12.7/30
3 – West Palm Beach 12.7/23
5 - Tampa 12.1/26
6 – Columbus 11.5/23
7 – Orlando 11.2/25
7 -  Norfolk 11.2/21
7 – Knoxville 11.2/21
10 – Pittsburgh 11.1/24

However, the race’s overnight rating was a 33% decline from the 12.3 overnight delivered when American Pharoah won the Triple Crown in 2015, a performance that ended a 37-year Triple Crown drought. That decline in viewership is almost identical to the numbers generated for the Boston Red Sox when the team broke its World Series drought in 2004 (average of 25.4 million viewers) compared to when they won the World Series again three years later in 2007 (17.1 million viewers). Both of those World Series were four-game sweeps.

ON THE AIR

FOX Sports will pair veteran reporter Erin Andrews with Kristina Pink for the NFL’s Thursday Night Football as co-reporters this fall, the network said. In addition, Andrews and Pink will contribute features to both FOX NFL KICKOFF and FOX NFL SUNDAYS. The pair will join seven-time Emmy award-winning broadcaster and lead FOX NFL play-by-play announcer Joe Buck and Pro Football Hall of Famer Troy Aikman. Andrews has contributed to the NFL on FOX’s coverage since 2013 and has worked regularly with Buck and Aikman since 2014. She will continue being the lone reporter for FOX NFL’s top game each Sunday during the season.

Golf Channel’s Morning Drive, which will kick off each day of U.S. Open week on the network, will include 2006 U.S. Open champion Geoff Ogilvy on Tuesday and Wednesday. Ogilvy, widely regarded as one of golf’s most insightful players, will offer perspective leading into the competition on Thursday. The show also will feature live reports with guests joining from Shinnecock Hills, including Jaime Diaz, Rex Hoggard, Tim Rosaforte and Geoff Shackelford.

Among the numerous features planned for the network’s Golf Central Live show will be a look into the life of Jimmy Dunne. A Long Island native, Dunne has become a known figure in the golf world thanks to his friendships with the likes of Phil Mickelson, Rory McIlroy, Rickie Fowler and Patrick Reed. Mike Tirico examines the severe burden facing the longtime Wall Street trader, along with Dunne’s perpetual mission.

In ratings news, the Friday night’s series-deciding Game 4 of the 2018 NBA Finals drew a 11.2 Nielsen metered market household rating for ABC, winning the night across all of television for the 64th consecutive time, according to Nielsen.

Meanwhile, Thursday night’s series-clinching Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final on NBC averaged 6.714 million viewers, according to Nielsen, making it the most-watched Stanley Cup Final Game 5 in 16 years and up 51% vs. last year. The five-game series averaged 4.918 million viewers, making it the most-watched Final in three years and the most-watched Final without an Original Six team on record. Streaming of the Cup-clinching Game 5 set an NBC Sports Digital record for an NHL game with 381,000 uniques, up 119% vs 2017’s Game 5.

In the month of May, FS1 averaged 159k viewers vs. ESPN2’s average viewership of 126k, according to Fox. While ESPN2 still maintains a lead over FS1 for the year, FS1’s live sports slate is strong in June and July with World Cup matches and early rounds of the U.S. Open (golf) airing on the network. FS1’s daily studio programming continues to grow vs. last year through the end of May. All of FS1’s daily studio shows are up on average to date in 2018 over 2017. According to Fox, First Things First has more than doubled its time period average over the same dates in 2017; Undisputed is up 37%; The Herd is up 19%; Speak for Yourself is up 21% over the previous year and NASCAR’s Race Hub remains cable television’s No. 1 daily NASCAR studio show.
