PROGRAMMING

The U.S. team’s controversial thumping of Thailand was a FIFA Women’s World Cup ratings winner for FOX, netting a 2.2 metered marketing rating for the broadcaster on June 11.The 13-0 drubbing drew criticism from those who cried piling on by the Americans, while others backed the team for playing to its full ability, even against an outgunned opponent. Either way, the game was up 5% from the 2.1 metered market rating for the U.S opener against Australia on Fox Sports 1 in primetime from the 2015 Women’s World Cup in Canada and scored a 175% bump from the 0.8 mark on ESPN for the team’s first match against North Korea in the 2011 tournament from Germany. For its part, Telemundo Deportes’ coverage of the U.S.-Thailand generated a total audience delivery of 486,000, including 444,000 on Telemundo, more than double the 203,000 for the Americans in their match against the team from Down Under in the 2015 tourney.

In what is expected to their final training camp before departing for Las Vegas, the Oakland Raiders will be under the spotlight during the 14th edition of HBO’s Emmy-winning cinema verite franchise Hard Knocks.  The Raiders should provide ample entertainment as the AFC West team is headed by a pair of TV veterans: Head Coach Jon Gruden, a nine-year Monday Night Football analyst, is in the sophomore season of his second stint leading the club, while Mike Mayock, the longtime NFL Network analysts, is in his rookie run as General Manager. The club added controversial players in top wide receiver Antonio Brown and middle linebacker Vontaze Burfict, who as a member of the Cincinnati Bengals knocked out the former Steelers stalwart with a helmet-to-helmet blow in a 2016 playoff game. A 30-person NFL Films crew will be in Raiders’ training camp in Napa Valley, shooting more than 1,750 hours of footage over the course of the series. The first of the five-installment Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Oakland Raiders debuts Aug 6 at 10p.

AXS TV will look to pin wrestling viewers on Saturday night. Starting July 13, Women of Wrestling and New Japan Pro Wrestling will command the network’s Saturday primetime time slots at 8p and 9p, respectively. The two programs previously aired as part of the network’s Friday night Fights block showcasing AXS TV Fights, which will continue to run live on Friday nights. WOW will initiate an eight-week encore, recapping the series’ first season, before launching the 24-episode second campaign Sept. 7. As a lead-in to New Japan Pro Wrestling’s new schedule position, the network will air a special live broadcast of the first night of  promotion’s G1 CLIMAX 29 tournament in Dallas on July 6 at  p. That event precedes a six-week stretch of same-day, near-live coverage of the G1 CLIMAX tourney

ESPN will be on hand for MLB’s first game in Nebraska June 13, when it presents the Kansas City Royals and the Detroit Tigers from TD Ameritrade Park, the site of the College World Series, which the programmer will cover beginning June 15. As for Royals-Tigers, Karl Ravech, Eduardo Perez and Kyle Peterson will call the game at 8p from Omaha, home to the Royals AAA team, the Storm Chasers.
