DA confident doctor in abortion pill case will answer for her actions

BY DOUG GRAHAM | Staff writer

Tony Clayton, district attorney for Iberville, West Baton Rouge and Point Coupee parishes, says he is confident a New York doctor eventually will make her way to a Louisiana courtroom to face felony charges for mailing abortion medication to the mother of a pregnant Port Allen teen who ingested it.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has rejected Louisiana's request for the doctor's extradition request and pledged to uphold that state’s “shield” law to protect the doctor, Margaret Carpenter, within the Empire State.

Clayton praised Liz Murrill, Louisiana's attorney general who has joined the prosecution of Carpenter. He described what happened in the Port Allen case as “no kind of way, shape or form of safe telemedicine.”

Voters in parts of Baton Rouge will go to the polls today to select a new state senator for District 14, which covers some of the parish’s poorest neighborhoods to the north and wealthier neighborhoods to south, including part of St. George, as well as downtown and parts of the LSU campus.

Sophomore left-hander Kade Anderson struck out eight batters in five innings and Utah Valley transfer Daniel Dickinson went 3-for-4 with five RBIs as the LSU Tigers opened their baseball season with 14-0 win over Purdue Fort Wayne.
