I, Nephi, having been born of goodly parents, therefore I was taught somewhat in all the learning of my father; and having seen many afflictions in the course of my days, nevertheless, having been highly favored of the Lord in all my days; yea, having had a great knowledge of the goodness and the mysteries of God, therefore I make a record of my proceedings in my days.

1844 - The Prophet Joseph was questioned by a reporter from the St. Louis Gazette who wanted to know by what principle he had become so powerful with the inhabitants and the armed men of the Nauvoo Legion. Joseph replied that “I obtained power on the principles of truth and virtue, which would last when I was dead and gone” (History of the Church, 6:343).
