Sabbath Day
SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY
Doctrine and Covenants 59:9-11
And that thou mayest more fully keep thyself unspotted from the world, thou shalt go to the house of prayer and offer up thy sacraments upon my holy day; For verily this is a day appointed unto you to rest from your labors, and to pay thy devotions unto the Most High. Nevertheless thy vows shall be offered up in righteousness on all days and at all times.

Brigham Young
QUOTE OF THE DAY
Brigham Young

“We are under the necessity of assembling here from Sabbath to Sabbath, and in Ward meetings, … to teach, talk, pray, sing, and exhort. What for? To keep us in remembrance of our God and our holy religion. Is this custom necessary? Yes; because we are so liable to forget—so prone to wander, that we need to have the Gospel sounded in our ears as much as once, twice, or thrice a week, or, behold, we will turn again to our idols” (Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Brigham Young, p. 146-147).

TODAY IN CHURCH HISTORY
July 19
1847 - From the top of Big Mountain, Orson Pratt and John Brown become the first Latter-day Saint Pioneers to see the valley of the Great Salt Lake in the distance. They had ridden ahead of their camp and climbed up the high mountain to see what lay ahead. They saw the first stretch of flat prairie they had seen since entering the mountain country. Fifteen wagons stayed with a recovering Brigham Young, while forty wagons, under the direction of Willard Richards and George A. Smith, went ahead with instructions to plant crops as soon as they arrived at a suitable place in the valley ahead.
