"If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words: then shalt thou delight thyself in the Lord; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it." |

Rather than believe or search the scriptures, the Zoramites reinterpreted them to their own ends to make themselves look good. Whatever “destroyed their craft,” they opposed, regardless of the truth or the testimony of the prophets (Alma 35:3).

1856 - The fifth handcart company leaves Iowa City for the Salt Lake Valley. It contained 576 people, 146 handcarts, and 7 wagons. Most had crossed the Atlantic Ocean on the ship “Horizon,” leaving from Liverpool, England. Returning missionary Edward Martin was chosen as the Captain. Time delays and the need to supply so large a group resulted in the late start of the Martin Handcart Company leaving Iowa City.
