1857 - United States President James Buchanan instructs the War Department to issue orders for an army to assemble at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and march to Utah to put down the so-called “rebellion” of the Mormons. This was the beginning of the “Utah War” which later became known as “Buchanan’s Blunder.”
