The cost to build its new commercial-scale, land-based salmon farm in Pioneer, Ohio, could run as much as 60 percent higher than its initial estimate, genetically modified salmon producer AquaBounty Technologies said. The farm, which is projected to produce 10,000 metric tons of farmed salmon, was originally estimated to cost upwards of $200 million (€172 million). AquaBounty now expects the 479,000-square-foot facility to cost between $290 million (€250 million) to $320 million (€276 million). The Conservative MP Owen Paterson has escaped suspension from the Commons for 30 days and a possible by-election, after the government intervened at the last minute to pause the process and review the watchdog that investigates wrongdoing in parliament. The former cabinet minister was found to have committed an “egregious” breach of lobbying rules during meetings and conversations with the Food Standards Agency and Department for International Development, while he was being paid more than £100,000 by two firms – Randox and Lynn’s Country Foods. However, an amendment to the motion to suspend him was backed by Boris Johnson. But several Tory MPs – including ministers – told the Guardian that Paterson was “guilty as sin”.
