| | The US and Mexico are tangling over Mexico’s proposal to ban genetically modified corn, with a top US official threatening to initiate a trade dispute if the two countries can’t find an agreement. Mexico plans to ban genetically modified corn by 2024, adding another flashpoint to the two countries’ tensions over trade. More than 90% of corn grown in the US is genetically modified, according to the National Corn Growers Association. The Wall Street Journal Pakistan's Minister for National Food Security and Research Tariq Bashir Cheema said the government would never allow import of anything that had been banned abroad for being dangerous for human health and had environmental hazards. “Import of genetically modified organism (GMO) seeds of soybean was banned into the country due to its negative impact on human health and environment,” said the minister. The import of GMO soybean seed has been banned since 2019. Pakistan Customs had recently confiscated the cargoes of nine ships that were illegally carrying the commodity for producing oil and poultry feed to supply to local poultry industry, he said. He argued that the Custom Intelligence had seized these consignments because GM soy was considered to be a major cause of cancer.
