| 13/January/25 | Bayer's costly experiment fails to give desired results In a bold move to restore $540 million in cost savings, Bayer CEO Bill Anderson cut out most of the company’s management roles last year. In March of 2024, the company slashed half of its executive positions. But the experiment has not yielded the intended results. Bayer’s market cap has fallen more than 44% this year. The stock price hit a 20-year low last November. Bayer is still reeling from the 2018 acquisition of Monsanto, the manufacturer of Roundup weedkiller (a product that has faced a steady stream of lawsuits, claiming the product causes cancer). So far, Monsanto is a $63 billion albatross that has failed to fly. Forbes Japan: Gene-edited crickets company goes bust In Japan, Gryllus, an edible insect company that farmed and sold crickets for food use and had developed gene-edited crickets, has gone bankrupt. Its debts amount to about 150 million yen (951,000 USD). Back in January 2024, the cricket research institute run by Gryllus at Tokushima University had closed its online shop. Bio Journal commented, "eating insects and the modification of insects by genome editing have not gained the acceptance of consumers". Gryllus filed for bankruptcy after facing public criticism over the use of its powdered crickets in school lunches. However, these crickets were likely non-GMO – Gryllus doesn't appear to have got to the point of marketing its gene-edited crickets before it went belly-up. GMWatch comment on articles in Bio Journal and Japan News Scientists sound alarm about using mosquitoes to vaccinate humans Human clinical trials are underway to use mosquitoes to vaccinate people against malaria, cardiologist Dr Peter McCullough reported. McCullough cited a paper reporting results from a double-blind, controlled clinical trial. The trial evaluated the safety, side effects and efficacy of immunising people via mosquito bites, using mosquitoes infected with a genetically engineered version of the parasite that causes malaria. “It seems as if the world of vaccinology has ramped up to a feverish pitch with amplified research, massive funding, and no limit to the extent in which vaccines could be injected into humans,” McCullough wrote. McCullough said he believes “there should be a moratorium, a ban, on all mosquito vector research right now for human conditions”. He added, “No Institutional Review Board would agree to, you know, mass populating, mass vaccinating a population without their consent with mosquitoes.” The Defender Our new Review is out Our new Review on GMOs in general is out and is archived here.
