| 26/June/25 | New GMO alert: GMO rice isn't on the market, but it's still showing up While genetically modified rice is not currently commercially available, GMO contamination in non-GMO rice is all too common — accounting for a third of all such events globally. Now, several countries are experimenting with genome-edited rice as deregulation allows these products to enter the market without transparency, traceability or labelling. GMO varieties have been developed, though not currently commercialised, for a variety of traits in GMO rice, including: * Insect and disease resistance * Herbicide tolerance * Resistance to environmental stressors. Non-GMO Project via GMWatch US pushes for GM crops in India As India and the United States navigate complex negotiations over a Bilateral Trade Agreement concerning agricultural products, a particularly sensitive issue has emerged – agriculture. The US aims to introduce its apples, corn, and soybeans into the Indian market. However, New Delhi is deeply concerned about the US’s insistence that India permit the import of GM products, which are widely controversial in India.
