Despite three trial verdicts awarding nearly $200 million to cancer victims who used Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide, California cannot require a cancer warning on the product label because it is contradicted by “the great weight of evidence,” a federal judge ruled Monday. In issuing a permanent injunction against the state’s attempt to place a cancer warning on the world’s most widely used weedkiller, US District Judge William Shubb of Sacramento did not prevent California from including Roundup’s main ingredient, glyphosate, on its own list of probable human carcinogens. In the wake of the publication of a paper by a minority dissident group of German Greens lobbying for the de-regulation of gene editing, two prominent Greens in the European Parliament and German Parliament have made a strong statement re-affirming the position of the Green Party in favour of continued strong regulation. The statement follows votes by the Greens last week, when the German and European Parliament Green groups both decided to keep the Party's position in favour of regulation. Although a minority wanted a change, there were clear majorities in favour of regulation. GMWatch
 
 
Monsanto has petitioned the US Department of Agriculture to approve a new GE corn seed engineered to tolerate applications of not just one or two chemicals, but five — dicamba, glufosinate, quizalofop, 2,4-D and glyphosate. Pesticide Action Network North America (PANNA) says it knows who would benefit from this new seed — and it’s not farmers.
