| 06/October/20 | Pesticide mixtures harm health even when each pesticide is present at "safe" levels Groundbreaking new research shows that mixtures of pesticide residues commonly found in foods in the EU can have adverse effects on health even when each individual pesticide is present at a level considered safe by regulators. The new study also found that these harmful effects were missed by standard toxicological measures used for regulatory authorisations of pesticides, but were exposed by the use of molecular analytical techniques known as "omics". GMWatch Gene-silencing pesticides pose new risks to health, environment and farmers “Gene-silencing pesticides” now under development pose unique risks to surrounding ecosystems and beneficial insects, including bees, according to a new report released today by Friends of the Earth and Dr Eva Sirinathsinghji. The report summarizes the gaps in research on experimental gene-silencing pesticides and the risks they pose to human health, the environment, and farmers. Several biotech and agrichemical companies are moving quickly to patent and bring gene-silencing pesticides to market. GMWatch Attorney General Becerra defends Prop 65 warnings for cancer-causing pesticide In September, California Attorney General Xavier Becerra filed a notice of appeal, challenging a decision by the US District Court for the Eastern District of California barring Proposition 65 warnings for glyphosate-based herbicides. As a result of the International Agency for Research on Cancer’s (IARC) classification of glyphosate as a probable human carcinogen, the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) listed glyphosate as a chemical “known to the State to cause cancer”, effective July 7, 2017. Attorney General Becerra said, “We won’t let pesticide producers sweep the dangers of cancer-causing pesticides under the rug. GMWatch Lawsuit filed to protect US states’ labelling of genetically engineered seeds The Center for Food Safety (CFS) has filed an amended complaint in their ongoing litigation challenging the US Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) “bioengineered” (more commonly known as “genetically engineered”) food labelling rule, challenging the law’s prohibition on states' labelling of genetically engineered seeds. The new filing adds claims challenging the part of the “bioengineered foods” rule that will leave genetically engineered seeds unlabelled, preventing consumers and farmers from knowing if seeds are genetically engineered. GMWatch Mexico: Transgenic sequences found in 82% of tortillas, glyphosate in 27.7% In a study prepared by Mexico's National Council of Science and Technology (Conacyt), it was found that 27% of the tortillas consumed in Mexico had traces of the "probably" carcinogenic herbicide, glyphosate. This was confirmed by the director María Elena Álvarez-Buylla during a conference. The scientist explained that due to the loss of sovereignty, Mexico has had to resort to GM corn, which has been sprayed with glyphosate. The study also found that 82% of the foods analyzed had transgenic sequences and that 70% of urine samples contained glyphosate. The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, indicated that his government has an order not to use glyphosate herbicide and that it will only be allowed for private use, and that the import of this agrochemical will gradually be reduced over several years until it is eliminated completely.
