Andres Mendoza is no stranger to leaving work early to get home in time for his online classes. He works full time and goes to college part time so he can support himself without taking out student loans.

He's not alone. Research suggests that Latino students disproportionately fear taking on student loans. This debt aversion is often seen as a mechanism to protect their family's financial security. 

Throughout her childhood, Daisy Gonzales regularly moved in and out of the foster care system. School became her one safe haven.

Today, as the first Latina to serve as deputy chancellor of the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office, Gonzales is on a mission to get more Latino students to and through college.
