Student lists from providers like the College Board and the ACT systematically exclude underrepresented students, according to a series of reports from the Institute for College Access & Success.

Researchers found list search filters, which allow colleges to select which demographics of students they buy information on, disproportionately exclude students from low-income and rural communities, as well as communities of color. 

Freeman Hrabowski served as president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County from 1992 until earlier this year. Under his leadership, UMBC became the nation’s top college in terms of the number of Black students it graduates who later earn a Ph.D. in the natural sciences and engineering.

The University of California, hoping to widen admission access for disadvantaged students, will give a second chance to thousands of rejected California high school applicants who had a qualifying 3.0 grade point average but failed to complete the required series of 15 college preparation courses.

But there's a catch to receiving a guaranteed spot at the highly competitive universities: Students must first successfully complete their missing lower division and general education courses at a community college and earn the program's required grades.
