To break out of a pattern, one must first understand the pattern. You can’t just break out of it; one must know the pattern in which one is caught, the whole structure of the pattern – the so-called capitalist, communist, socialist, religious, or whatever it is – the patterns. And the pattern is oneself; you are not different from this pattern society has created. You are part of that pattern. Without completely understanding the whole pattern, you can’t escape from it. When you understand it completely, not as a reaction, then you won’t fall into another pattern. After all, society as it exists is afraid of human beings being free. Freedom is generally said to be against order. Society demands order at any price, and the order is always within the pattern. Within the pattern there is no freedom.
