Skimm'd while channeling Meredith Grey

  QUOTE OF THE DAY

"For good luck" - The reason an 80-year-old woman threw coins at a plane before take-off. One of them landed in the engine, causing an hours-long delay. Change of plans.

BAN DAY

The Story

Today, parts of President Trump's travel ban are going into effect.

Wait...back up.

Earlier this year, Trump signed an executive order aimed at temporarily banning refugees and travelers from several Muslim-majority countries from entering the US. But it was blocked by lower courts for being religious discrimination and an overreach of presidential powers. So Trump appealed to the Supreme Court. And earlier this week, the justices said parts of the ban can move forward until they hear arguments in the case later this year. But the Supremes said only travelers with a "bona fide relationship" to the US can come into the country. It was unclear what exactly that meant. Until now.

So what's the latest?

Yesterday, the Trump administration reportedly clarified who's in and who's out. Refugees and travelers from the listed countries (Sudan, Syria, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Yemen) will only be eligible for a visa if they have a close relative in the US. Parents, spouses, siblings, and children count. Grandparents, aunts and uncles, and cousins do not. And people with certain biz ties to the US will be given the OK.

For months, this travel ban has been in legal limbo and has sparked a LOT of controversy in and out of the courtroom. Now, while officials are hoping these latest clarifications will help things go more smoothly this time, there are still questions over how this will all be implemented.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

What to say when something's overpriced at the flea market...

Pulling a Blue Apron. Yesterday, the company knocked about $1 billion off its expected value. Earlier this month, Blue Apron - the meal kit delivery service - said 'let's cook up some non-soup stock' and filed to go public. It was expected to be valued at more than $3 billion. Not anymore. Turns out investors aren't super hungry for a company that's not making any profit, and basically burns through cash in order to market its service. Plus, there's the fact that Amazon just dropped nearly $14 billion to buy Whole Foods. Some say this could give Blue Apron some serious meal delivery competition. So now Blue Apron is backpedaling and is going to sell shares at a lower price, which means it could be worth about $2 billion. It's expected to make its New York Stock Exchange debut today. Who else is Amazon making life really hard for? Staples. Yesterday, the company said a private firm is buying it for nearly $7 billion. That's because you haven't bought office supplies in a real store since the Internet happened. And in recent years, Staples has been closing stores and taking an eraser to its sales. Now it's hoping going from a public to a private company will help it turn things around without shareholders breathing down its neck. Deal, inked.

What to say to your friend who went abroad Down Under...

Hear about this Cardinal? Yesterday, Australian authorities charged a senior Vatican official with sexual assault. Reminder: for decades, the Catholic Church has been dealing with allegations of sexual abuse between church leaders and young kids. Now police say Cardinal George Pell - who's from Australia and is considered Pope Francis's right-hand man - allegedly committed sexual assault in the past. He's the highest-ranking Vatican official to face sex abuse charges. He says he didn't do it. Now he has to report to court back in Australia next month. In other religious news...the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints aka the Mormon Church is changing up its rules. The Church will start offering paid maternity and paternity leave to its thousands of employees. And relax its work dress code. Women can now wear pants. And men don't have to wear just white shirts, they can choose from all the other light colors of the wind.

What people are watching...

The Philippines. Yesterday, the military there said they've found more than a dozen civilian bodies in the southern city of Marawi, likely killed by ISIS-linked militants. For decades, the Philippines - which is mostly Catholic - has been threatened by extremist uprisings. Then last month, ISIS-linked militants took over Marawi. President Duterte ordered martial law in the region, meaning the military can search homes or make arrests without warrants. But it hasn't been going so well. So far hundreds of people have died in the conflict. In recent weeks, hundreds of thousands of civilians have managed to escape the fighting, but many are still trapped in the city and the militants still have hostages that they're allegedly using as human shields. And now there's this. Meanwhile, Duterte - who's been accused of human rights abuses - has reportedly told the military not to worry about accidentally killing any civilians because he'll have troops' backs when it comes to any legal action. K.

What to say when you're in the middle of an intense game of Monopoly...

I need a 'get out of jail free' card. Yesterday, China released three activists who had been investigating shady labor practices at Chinese factories. In recent months, the three men went undercover at factories that have made products for everyone from Coach to Ivanka Trump. Because Chinese factories are known for basically being sweatshops. And these men say these specific factories force employees to work a ton of overtime, significantly underpay them, and reportedly even sometimes beat them. The factories say 'not true.' And that BTW they stopped producing Ivanka shoes earlier this year. Last month, Chinese authorities arrested the activists for illegal eavesdropping. Now they've been let out on bail to wait for their trial. But it's unclear if they've been formally charged with anything. In the meantime, they're trying to heel from the experience.

NO EXCUSES: HEALTHCARE

No Excuses. When it comes to healthcare, you've learned the history, terms, and gotten answers to your FAQs. This week's about the key players. Here's one...

Paul Ryan: Speaker of the House. Also the one who in early 2017 - after seven years of Republicans calling to repeal and replace Obamacare - rolled out a GOP plan with other party leaders. And got crickets. Ryan spent weeks tweaking the bill to get enough Republicans on board. In early May, it passed. Get to know all the other players over here.
