Skimm'd with "Friends" on in the background

  QUOTE OF THE DAY

"I had planned on winning Wimbledon this year" - Serena Williams, on how her pregnancy changed just a few of her 2017 goals. Baby bump in the road.

THINGS THE INTERNET IS FREAKING OUT ABOUT

CYBERATTACK

The Story

Yesterday, computer systems throughout the US and Europe said 'haaalp.'

Tell me more.

The systems were hit with ransomware, a kind of virus that locks people out of their computers and demands they pay up to take back control. Ukraine was hit hardest - government, transit, and banking systems, plus the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, were all affected. And the virus spread to some companies in Russia, Denmark, and the US. But it only affected Microsoft operating systems and it's unclear who's responsible. Security experts say the hack looks very similar to last month's massive WannaCry attack. The one where a stolen NSA hacking tool was used to infect hundreds of thousands of comps across the world. Some researchers pointed the finger at North Korea for that attack.

This is the second reminder in two months that life on the Interwebs has some serious potential downsides. And security experts are saying 'yes, this will definitely keep happening.' So keep calm and don't open sketchy files.

ANTITRUST

The Story

Yesterday, EU officials slapped Google with a $2.7 billion fine for unfair biz practices.

Tell me more.

When you search for products online, Google's shopping service is the thing that spits out a bunch of results at the top of the page. Google makes cash money from the companies whose products are featured. Now, the EU's saying that Google is giving itself a leg up by prominently featuring its own shopping service results instead of results from other comparison sites. And that this is illegal. Because antitrust. So now Google has to pay up and change its promotional ways. Google says it's just trying to be helpful for shoppers and might appeal the decision.

theSkimm

This was the largest fine ever in an EU antitrust case. And it could lead to more crackdowns on the tech industry, especially when it comes to how web services promote their products.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

What to say to your friend who grew up in Venezuela...

Heard about this? Last night, a helicopter swooped in over Venezuela's Supreme Court and started firing gunfire and grenades at the building. No one was injured. It later came out that the helicopter's pilot had posted a video on social media declaring his opposition to the country's "criminal government." All of which is just the latest twist in Venezuela's ongoing political crisis. Venezuela sits on the one of the world's largest reserves of oil that used to fuel its entire economy. But as global oil prices tanked, so did Venezuela's economy. That's pushed prices for things like food, medicine, and TP way up. Amid the economic chaos, Venezuelan President Maduro's been busy consolidating his power by doing things like stacking the Supreme Court with supporters and trying to strip the powers of the elected National Assembly, which is run by an opposition party. For years, people have taken to the streets demanding Maduro to step down. In recent months, protests have ramped up and dozens of people have died in clashes with the military. Now, this helicopter attack. The pilot says he's leading a coalition of military, police, and civilian officials that want Maduro to step down. But it's unclear whether the attacker has any support. Maduro called it a "terrorist" coup attempt and that he's working to capture the attacker. The plot thickens.

What to say when the pizza you ordered takes more than an hour to arrive...

Delayed. Yesterday, the Senate delayed the vote on its healthcare plan until after the July 4th break. The plan includes things like a cap on federal funding for Medicaid and a temporary freeze on Planned Parenthood funding. Itkeeps the rule that insurance companies can't hike up prices for people with pre-existing conditions, but has a caveat that could still increase certain healthcare costs for them. Earlier this week, the Congressional Budget Office - a nonpartisan group that calculates the impact of a new bill - said this bill would leave tens of millions more Americans without coverage in the next decade but it would also save the gov a lot of money. That didn't help convince any Democrats to back it. But - surprise - many GOP senators aren't pleased either. Some say the bill doesn't do enough to roll back Obamacare. And others are worried cutting funding for things like Medicaid and Planned Parenthood would hurt the Americans who need it most. The Senate was supposed to put it to a vote this week. But now they're going back to the drawing board. Then they'll wait for another CBO review before putting version 2.0 to a vote. Around we go.

What to say when your family can't decide what movie to watch over the long weekend...

Let's vote on it. Just like Germany. Later this week, German lawmakers will vote on whether to make same-sex marriage legal across the country. Germany is one of the few European countries that hasn't jumped on the same-sex marriage train. Right now, same-sex couples in Germany can only tie the knot through civil unions and they aren't allowed to adopt kids. And many Germans support legalizing gay marriage. But German Chancellor Angela Merkel hasn't always been on board. Until now. With parliamentary elections coming up later this year, lawmakers are pressuring Merkel to get it done, or else risk losing their political support. So now the issue is going to a vote in parliament. And it's looking like it'll get a big thumbs up. Who isn't seeing rainbow emojis? Connecticut. Yale University recently sued the state over certain bathroom rules. Connecticut's current building code says that buildings have to have a certain number of bathrooms assigned by gender. Yale wants to make its single-user bathrooms gender neutral, but that would mean that it doesn't meet the state's required toilet tally. Yale says the change would make life easier for "all gender identities."

What people are talking about...

Laquan McDonald. Yesterday, three current and former Chicago police officers were charged with trying to cover up McDonald's fatal shooting.Back in 2014, officers found McDonald - a black teenager - standing in the street. The officers said that McDonald lunged at them with a knife and that's when one of the officers opened fire. But in 2015, video from the incident came out, showing that McDonald was turning away when the officer shot him...16 times. The video sparked days of protests. And the officer was charged with first-degree murder. Now, it's come out that other officers on the scene gave false information in their reports, in order to throw off any criminal investigations. So they've been charged with things like obstruction of justice.

What to say when you realize Facebook just hit a major milestone...

The Queen's also in celebration mode. Yaass.

SKIMM SLEEP

Hitting snooze: We're all doing it. But it's not always a good idea. Researchers say those extra few minutes in between the sheets don't actually lead to quality sleep...and can even end up making you feel more tired. And since we keep hitting snooze, we're probably not getting enough sleep in the first place. This mattress and this pillow make us want to get into bed earlier. Psst...we got you a little discount on the mattress.

NO EXCUSES: HEALTHCARE

No Excuses. You need to know what's going on with healthcare policy in the US. That means knowing the key players. Here's one...

Max Baucus: The longtime Montana Democratic senator who, in 2008, made bipartisan healthcare reform his thing. For months, he led the Senate-side of talks that eventually led to Obamacare. Get some more face time over here.
