Skimm’d while getting in a pageant state of mind by watching “Miss Congeniality”
QUOTE OF THE DAY

“Human Alexa” - What one girl’s family started calling her, so that the Amazon version wouldn’t answer instead. ‘Mmmhmm,’ said girls named Siri everywhere.

BEING DIPLOMATIC

THE STORY

President Trump is taking a red pen to US foreign relations.

WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?

Yesterday, the world got an early look at how Trump will handle American policies and relationships abroad. Here’s what’s going down and where…

Mexico...as in the country’s president canceled his plans to meet with Trump next week. This came after Trump signed an executive order to extend the US-Mexico border wall. And repeated that Mexico will pay for it. Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto said ‘again, not happening.’ Yesterday, he nixed his trip to the US altogether. Then, the White House said Trump’s considering taxing Mexican goods coming into the US to help pay for the wall. Adios, amigos.

The UK...as in British PM Theresa May’s having tea and crumpets with Trump today. She’ll be the first foreign leader to meet with him since he took office. And she’s hoping the visit will help the US and the UK get even cozier now that Britain’s planning to Brexit the EU. Think: plans for a future UK-US trade deal - something the UK’s not allowed to start negotiating until it officially says ‘cheerio’ to the EU.

The State Department...as in yesterday, it came out that the Trump administration is removing multiple senior managers at the State Dept. These are career diplomats who’ve served under Dem and GOP administrations. It’s not unusual for these positions to change hands. It IS unusual for the people holding them to leave without a replacement ready to step in. Plus, Sec. of State nominee Rex Tillerson hasn’t gotten the official thumbs up from the Senate to take the job. So now, one of the most important US departments is an empty house.

It’s day seven of the Trump presidency, and he’s already made significant shifts on trade, immigration, and now foreign policy.

THE *: Meanwhile, in an interview yesterday, Trump’s chief strategist Stephen Bannon said the media is the “opposition party” to this administration, and that it should “keep its mouth shut.”

REPEAT AFTER ME...

WHAT TO SAY TO YOUR FRIEND WHO’S HAVING A CHINESE NEW YEAR PARTY…

The rooster’s not the only animal getting attention. Yesterday, a study came out that revealed scientists have created a human-pig embryo. Yup. Turn that grossed-out frown upside down, because this could help people in the long run. Here’s how it happened: scientists put human stem cells (cells that can help develop organs) into a pig embryo. A few weeks later, the embryos turned into a pre-game of human organs like the heart and liver. One giant leap for mankind, because on average, thousands of people in the US die every year while waiting for an organ donor. Scientists say it’ll be a while, but those people could eventually get by with a little help from Babe. Oink you.

WHAT TO SAY TO YOUR FRIEND WHO SOMETIMES RELIES ON A MAGIC 8 BALL...

Here’s something you can be sure about. A Williams sister will win the Australian Open. Yesterday, the Williams sisters each beat out their competition in the semifinals. They’ll be in a sister-sister grand slam finals match tomorrow for the first time in almost a decade. Meanwhile, in a Swiss showdown, Roger Federer beat Stan Wawrinka to reach the finals. It’s Federer’s first time going all the way Down Under since 2010. Today, he finds out who he’ll face in the men’s final on Sunday. Game, set, match.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU’RE AT DINNER WITH FRIENDS...

This is tough. A new study shows that girls may start believing that boys are smarter than them as early as six years old. Scientists told kids a story about a “really, really smart” person. And then asked them to choose who the smart person was based on photos of men and women. Most five year-old girls and boys said their own gender was the smart one. But six year-old girls were less likely to pick a photo of a woman. Many of those girls also didn’t want to play a game that they were told was for “really, really smart” kids. Not good.

WHAT TO SAY TO YOUR FRIEND WHO CAN’T TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LAPIS AND CERULEAN…

Miranda Priestly’s coming to Broadway. That’s all.
