THINGS ON THE SUPREMES' PLAYLIST

SAMSUNG

THE STORY

Yesterday, the Supreme Court sided with Samsung in a major patent case the company’s been facing against Apple.

BACK UP.

The two biggest smartphone makers in the world have been in a legal WWE smackdown for years. It all started back in 2011, when Apple sued Samsung for patent infringement - aka Apple said some of Samsung’s phones were playing the imitation game with its iPhones. A lower court told Apple ‘yup you’re right’ and Samsung had to pay hundreds of millions of dollars in damages. Samsung says it shouldn’t have had to fork over that much money, and took the case to the Supremes.

WHAT’S THE LATEST?

Yesterday, the Supremes agreed with Samsung, and said that there’s a difference between copying an entire design and copying just part of a design. Now the case goes back to a lower court to reconsider just how much money Samsung owes Apple.

This has been the biggest patent case to hit the tech world in years, and everyone in Silicon Valley‘s been taking sides when it comes to what this could mean for the future of the industry. Meanwhile, this ruling is a small win in what’s otherwise been an explosive year (in a bad way) for Samsung.

INSIDER TRADING

THE STORY

Yesterday, the Supremes made it easier to prosecute insider trading cases.

TELL ME MORE.

A few years ago, a lower court ruled that insider trading isn’t on the naughty list unless the trader and the insider both get something out of it. Enter: a guy who was convicted of insider trading back in 2013 after getting confidential info from his brother-in-law. He appealed, saying his brother-in-law didn’t get anything (like cash money) in return.

WHAT’S THE LATEST?

Yesterday, the Supremes told him ‘doesn’t matter, it’s still insider trading.’ And that’s why the SEC’s texting each other the prayer hands emoji.

The US has been going through a major crackdown on insider trading in recent years. Now, the Supremes are giving prosecutors a leg up when it comes to taking people down for being financially shady.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU ACCIDENTALLY ORDER SHOES IN THE WRONG SIZE...

What’s the cancellation policy? President-elect Donald Trump’s wondering the same thing. Yesterday, Trump said he wants to hit ‘cancel’ on two new Air Force One planes. Apparently the current planes are getting a little over the hill, and it’s becoming pretty pricey to keep them in good shape. So the US gov asked Boeing to design harder, better, faster, stronger planes that could start flying in the 2020s. The problem? Trump says the price tag could be upwards of $4 billion, which he says is “totally out of control.” Boeing says it’s in brainstorm mode so it’s too early to tell how much the planes will cost. Still, Trump doesn’t want to get to stompin’ in his Air Force Ones.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT...

Indonesia. Last night, a 6.5-magnitude earthquake hit a northern region of the country and killed at least 50 people. Dozens were injured. Many buildings, including homes, mosques, and shops, were destroyed. More than a decade ago, this same region in Indonesia was hit by another major earthquake that trigged a tsunami and killed tens of thousands of people. So this earthquake is bringing back a lot of bad memories for people there. And officials are saying the death toll could rise because the town is still in search and rescue mode.

WHAT TO SAY TO YOUR FRIEND WHO WAKES UP BEFORE 5AM TO WORK OUT…

Not down with that. German Chancellor Angela Merkel is also not down with some things. Yesterday, Merkel said she wants to ban the full-face veils worn by some Muslim women in Germany. Reminder: in recent years, Merkel’s thrown Germany’s doors wide open to more than a million migrants and refugees fleeing from places like Syria, where many people are Muslim. A lot of people in Germany are none too pleased about how welcoming she’s been toward newcomers. Earlier this year, they took their anger out in local elections, and Merkel’s party lost out to a populist party on the right. Yesterday, Merkel was re-elected as the leader of her party. And now she’s trying to lend an ear to anti-refugee voters she’s hoping will give her another term as chancellor when they hit the polls next year. Das politics.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SADDENED BY...

Rashaan Salaam. Earlier this week, the Heisman Trophy winner was found dead at a park in Colorado. Salaam played for the University of Colorado and became the first Colorado player to win the Heisman in 1994. Then he went on to play for the Chicago Bears. But injuries and an apparent addiction to marijuana caught up with him and ended his career. It’s unclear how Salaam died. Officials say there were no signs of foul play and are reportedly looking into whether it was suicide.

WHAT TO SAY TO YOUR FRIEND WHO’S PART OF THE BEYHIVE...
