QUOTE OF THE DAY

“Superb Owl” - The search term that spikes every year during a certain big game. Hoot hoot hike.

THINGS PLAYING OUT

SUPER BOWL

THE STORY

Last night, the New England Patriots pulled off a serious comeback. They beat the Atlanta Falcons 34-28 to win the Super Bowl.

WHAT HAPPENED?

The Falcons were up the entire game and went into the fourth quarter with a 28-9 lead. Then the Patriots got it together. Wide receiver Julian Edelman made this crazy catch. Running back James White did OK too. And the Pats forced the Super Bowl into OT for the first time ever. Now, Patriots QB Tom Brady has more Super Bowl rings than any QB in history. Falcons QB Matt Ryan has the NFL MVP title as a consolation prize. Meanwhile, Lady Gaga used her halftime performance to audition for Spider Man. And to make sure everyone knows that she can really sing.

WHAT ABOUT THE ADS?

Brands reminded everyone watching that they live in a melting pot. ‘CC’ Budweiser, Airbnb, 84 Lumber, Coca-Cola. Mr. Clean showed off his moves. JT and Christopher Walken said ‘bai bai bai.’ Honda had everyone pulling out their old yearbooks. Gronk was off the field but in all the ads. And you’re excited for the next season of “Stranger Things.”

This season started with Brady sitting out four games after his alleged role in Deflategate. It ended with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell getting booed while handing the team the Lombardi Trophy.

IMMIGRATION BAN

THE STORY

President Trump’s immigration ban has been benched. For now.

REMIND ME.

Over a week ago, Trump signed an executive order temporarily banning people from seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the US. He also temporarily banned refugees, and Syrian refugees indefinitely. Dozens of people were detained at airports, and tens of thousands had their visas revoked. Last week, Washington state’s attorney general sued the Trump administration, saying parts of the ban violate the Constitution.

WHAT’S THE LATEST?

Last Friday, a federal judge sided with the Washington AG and temporarily blocked the ban. Trump said the “so-called judge” is opening the country to “potential terrorists,” and “if something happens blame him.” The Justice Department appealed the ruling. Yesterday, a federal appeals court said the ruling stands for now. But it’s giving both sides until today to bring more info to the court before it makes the final call. For now, refugees and travelers from those seven banned countries can enter the US.

Trump’s supporters say this ban is needed to keep the country safe. But critics on both sides of the aisle say this process is just called checks and balances.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU GET THE FLU FOR THE SECOND TIME IN A MONTH…

Can’t catch a break. In recent weeks, Brazil’s been dealing with the worst outbreak of yellow fever it’s had in years. Dozens of people have died and officials are looking into hundreds of other suspected cases. Yellow fever: the virus spread by the same type of mosquito that carries Zika. It usually leads to symptoms like - yup - fever and muscle aches. It’s also much deadlier than Zika. The good news? Unlike Zika, there’s a vaccine. The bad news? The vaccine’s been so in demand lately that health officials say it’s running low. Last week, the CDC said anyone in the US heading to Brazil should be vaccinated first.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN SOMEONE BREAKS INTO YOUR CAR…

Time to up my security. Turkey’s saying the same. Yesterday, Turkish police arrested hundreds of suspected ISIS members in a huge anti-terror raid across the country. It was the largest raid ever of this kind in Turkey. The country’s been having major national security issues recently. It’s still dealing with the fallout of a failed military coup. And it’s been hit by multiple terrorist attacks linked to ISIS, including a New Year’s shooting at a nightclub that killed nearly 40 people. It’s unclear what will happen next for the arrested suspects.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOUR FRIEND FINALLY RETURNS THOSE SHOES SHE ‘BORROWED’ LAST YEAR…

Thanks…Romanians are saying the same. Over the weekend, Romania’s government said it will get rid of a new law that would have legalized some types of corruption. Romania’s been dealing with a corruption problem for years. After the gov passed the law, hundreds of thousands of Romanians said ‘nope, not down with this.’ Cue days of massive protests. As in, the largest the country’s seen since the fall of communism back in the 80s. Now, the gov’s telling people ‘we hear you.’ Democracy FTW.

THING TO KNOW

Sanctions: The diplomatic version of a yellow card. It’s a way of pressuring a country to get its act together without getting troops involved. Like, by cutting off trade or financial ties instead. Think: the US sanctioning Russia for hacking the election. The UN sanctioning North Korea for trying to go nuclear. Usually a committee or gov office is in charge of making sure the sanctions get enforced. It’s how world leaders say ‘consider yourself warned.’
