Skimm’d while figuring out if HQ can afford to take care of a furry new BFF
QUOTE OF THE DAY

“The Texas Rangers are on the trail ” - A Texas gov official, assuring everyone that the best and brightest are searching for Tom Brady’s missing Super Bowl jersey. In case you were wondering.

COURTING

THE STORY

President Trump’s immigration executive order is still in legal limbo.

CATCH ME UP.

Over a week ago, Trump temporarily banned people from seven mostly-Muslim countries from entering the US. Last week, Washington state’s attorney general sued Trump, arguing that the ban is unconstitutional. The federal judge hearing the case said ‘agreed,’ and the ban was temporarily lifted. Meaning people from those countries can now enter the US. The Justice Dept appealed to get the ban immediately put back in place. The appeals court said ‘no can do,’ but gave the Trump administration more time to make its case. Meanwhile, 16 other AGs, former US diplomats, and more than 100 companies have told the court they’re against the ban for economic and national security reasons.

WHERE ARE WE NOW?

Today, the appeals court will hear arguments from both sides. Expect the Justice Dept. to argue that the president has broad authority to control who comes in and out of the country. Expect the state AG to argue that putting the ban back in place would “unleash chaos.”

The legal back and forth over this ban has created confusion for many - including tens of thousands of people who’ve had their visas revoked, then reinstated. No matter where the appeals court comes down, many think this case will eventually go all the way to the Supremes.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU HEAR “1984″ IS COMING TO BROADWAY...

Big Brother’s not the only one snooping. Late last week, a US judge said Google has to hand over emails connected with an FBI fraud case that are being stored overseas. Now, Google’s saying ‘no can do’ because privacy. Last year, Microsoft had a similar run-in with US officials. Microsoft argued - successfully - that it did not have to turn over emails that are stored outside the country, since US officials don’t have the authority to “reach beyond US borders.” Google was banking on getting the same legal treatment. Didn’t happen. So the company says it plans on appealing. This is one of a few similar cases in recent years where Silicon Valley companies have faced off against US officials (see: San Bernardino). Privacy, meet confusion.

WHAT TO SAY TO YOUR FRIEND WHO’S HAVING A LOW-KEY ANNIVERSARY...

Just like the royals. Yesterday, Queen Elizabeth II celebrated 65 years on the throne - further cementing her status as the longest-reigning monarch in British history. Yaass queen. The 90-year-old lived it up by spending a quiet day at her country home. Who wasn’t feeling quiet across the pond? Parliament. Yesterday, one of its leaders said he doesn’t want President Trump to address British lawmakers during a planned visit later this year. Why, you ask? Because Parliament’s against “racism and sexism.” Bloody subtle.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE WATCHING...

Israel. Yesterday, the Israeli gov passed a law that legalizes thousands of already-existing settler homes on private Palestinian land in the West Bank. Reminder: Israelis have been building settlements in that area for decades. But Palestinians see the West Bank as a part of their future state. And the UN’s been saying that not only are the settlements illegal but also make a peaceful two-state solution - where Israel and Palestine would be two different states on a map - very difficult. Israeli PM Netanyahu and his supporters are pro-settlements. Israel’s Supreme Court? Not so much. A few years ago, they ruled that a large settlement in the West Bank is illegal because it sits on private Palestinian property. Almost a week ago, Israelis living in that settlement were officially told to leave. So there are questions over whether this new law will last.

THING TO KNOW

17 hours and 30 minutes: The world’s longest flight. It went from Auckland, New Zealand, to Doha, Qatar yesterday. That’s a lot of colonial women on the wing.
